Never UndonePsalm 103:14

The Year I Could Not Announce

This message is for the man whose family had planned to celebrate a year of freedom, and who has to say something to them instead

The cake box is on the counter and he has not opened it, and he is not going to, because he already knows what is written on the top of it.

Saturday, four in the afternoon, and the backyard is filling up. His brother in law is out there wrestling with the speaker, which never works the first time and everybody has opinions about it. Two of his nieces are blowing up balloons and arguing about the color order. There is a folding table with a cloth on it that only comes out for baptisms and graduations, and somebody has already put the pan of arroz in the middle of it, covered with foil, because the sun is still hot on that side of the yard.

His wife bought the cake on Thursday. She would not tell him what it said. She was so pleased with herself that she walked out of the kitchen humming.

He is at the sink filling a pitcher he does not need to fill.

Because it was not a year. It was three hundred and fifty-four days, and then it was eleven days ago, and he has been in this kitchen a dozen times since Thursday trying to make the arithmetic come out differently.

He knows exactly how it went. He knows the hour. He knows the drive, and the excuse he built for himself in advance, which is the part that he cannot get past, because it means it was not a moment of weakness, it was a plan. And he knows what he said to his wife on Friday morning when she asked how he was, and it was one word, and it was not true.

Out in the yard somebody gets the speaker working, and there is a burst of noise and everybody cheers.

And his mother comes in for napkins and squeezes his arm on the way past and says, mi'jo, I am so proud of you, and goes back out with the napkins.

He stands at the sink with the water running over the top of a full pitcher.

There is a candle in that box with a one on it. He can see the shape of it through the plastic window.

You have stood in a kitchen like that. Maybe not with a cake, maybe not with a yard full of people, but with a number in your head that went back to zero and a set of faces that do not know yet. And you have been running the same arithmetic he is running: whether the year counts, whether any of it counts, whether the whole thing has to start over now from the beginning.

He knows what we are made of

David is in the middle of a psalm about how God deals with people, and he puts in a line that has held up men bigger than me.

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.Psalm 103:13-14

He knows our frame. That is a maker's word. It means the specifications, what the thing is built out of, what it will do under load. And then David says the other half, which is even better: He remembers we are dust.

Not He tolerates it. Not He is disappointed but soldiering on. He remembers, actively, as a thing He keeps in mind while dealing with you, that you are a creature made out of the ground.

You are not a surprise to God today, and you were not a surprise to Him eleven days ago. Psalm 103:14 says He knows the frame He made and never once forgot what it was made of, and His Spirit did not move into a house He was misinformed about.

Now hear what that is not. It is not permission and I will not turn it into permission. What happened eleven days ago was real, it cost something, and the excuse he built in advance is exactly as ugly as he thinks it is. A God who knows our frame is not a God who shrugs. The same psalm has Him forgiving iniquity, which means there was iniquity, named as such, and not a mishap.

But between minimizing it and being crushed by it there is a third road, and it is the one Scripture actually walks. The Spirit convicts a man in order to lift him, never to level him, and that is why the same passage that names the sin puts the east and the west between you and it. You have a God who called it what it is and did not change His mind about you in the same breath.

The counter is not the covenant

Here is the arithmetic that is torturing him at the sink, and it is worth saying out loud, because a lot of us are being ruined by a number.

Three hundred and fifty-four days happened. A relapse does not reach back through time and un-happen them. The mornings he did not go. The Tuesday he called his brother from the parking lot instead. The night in February he sat in his truck for forty minutes and then drove home. Those are events. They occurred. They are in the record of what God did in a man, and no counter on any app has the authority to delete them.

The counter is a tool, and it is a useful one, and it is not the covenant. It measures days. It does not measure what the Holy Spirit has been doing in you underneath the days.

You are not back at the beginning, whatever the number on the screen says. The written word says the good work begun in you is being carried on by the One who began it, and it is His Spirit doing that carrying, so a year of Him working is not erased by a Thursday.

And I am not handing you a schedule for the next stretch, or telling you what your counter is supposed to read later. God has never worked to my calendar, and nobody is checking your number against anybody else's. What He does with this, and how fast, is His.

What you say to the people in the yard

So what does he say when he walks out there.

Not a speech. A speech is a way of making a family's afternoon about your feelings, and it usually ends with everybody comforting the man who let them down, which is a strange machine to build.

One true sentence is enough. It was not a year. I am eleven days in and I am not hiding it. That is it. And then let it be quiet for a second, and let somebody hug you, and eat the food.

You are held in that yard whether or not you say it well. Scripture says love covers a multitude of sins and bears all things, and the Spirit is entirely capable of making a badly delivered sentence land right in the ears of the people who love you.

And this is the place to say the plain thing, because it is not a footnote. Bringing another human being into this does not replace anything God is doing; a great deal of what He does, He does through exactly that. Go and see a doctor, because a slip very often sits on top of sleep, pain, a medication or something in the body nobody has looked at in years. Go and see a counselor, somebody who has heard your exact eleven days before and did not so much as blink. Tell one friend the unedited whole of it, and if the damage is reaching the people out under those balloons, do not go about repairing that by yourself. And if your evenings have gone somewhere heavier than shame, if the idea of clearing out of the world for good has been standing in this kitchen with you this week, call 988 or a crisis line today and get somebody close enough to stay.

You have somewhere to put this that is not your own two hands. James 5:16 says to confess to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed, which puts other people right in the middle of the healing instead of outside it, and it is the Spirit who does that healing through somebody who shows up on a Saturday.

The breakthrough

So go out into the yard.

You are still in this, right now, as you read, with eleven days behind you and the year not thrown away. Psalm 103 says He has removed our transgressions from us as far as the east is from the west, and the Spirit who applied that to you in February is applying it to you at four o'clock this afternoon, without one word of it depending on your streak.

And take the number down off the wall where you have it hanging like a verdict. Count if counting helps you. Plenty of men are helped by counting, and there is nothing holy about refusing a tool. Just do not let a number tell you what God thinks, because it does not have that information.

You have a place at that table and it was never contingent on the announcement you were going to make. Scripture says nothing separates us from the love of God in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is the deposit guaranteeing that, which means the seat in the yard was paid for by somebody else a long time before the cake was ordered.

Declare this over yourself

Say these in the kitchen, over the sink, with the noise coming in from the yard. Out loud. A man speaks like this as an ambassador and never as an achiever: the words belong to the King, they are spoken by somebody He sent, and eleven days ago did nothing to the commission. Every one of these three lines comes up out of Scripture, and a spoken sentence goes to work in a kitchen at four on a hard Saturday afternoon because the Holy Spirit takes it there, so a voice that breaks halfway through gets it home as surely as a steady one. When the rest of this comes, and how, runs on His timing and not on my arithmetic.

  1. Candle in the box with a one on it, you are not the measure of what God has done in me. His word says the good work begun in me is being carried on by the One who began it, so those three hundred and fifty-four days are not going in the trash to make my arithmetic tidy.
  2. Fear that I am the same man I was at the start of all this, you have had the run of my Saturdays and you are finished here. In the name of Jesus, out of my kitchen, because Psalm 103:14 says He knows my frame and remembers I am dust, and the Holy Spirit, at work in me since February, did not quit on me eleven days ago.
  3. Lord, You know exactly what I am made of and You have never once been misinformed about me. Your word promised that You put my transgressions as far from me as the east is from the west, and Your Spirit is holding me together while I walk out into that yard, so I am going out there now to tell them the truth.
