He went out to the garage for a socket set and he has been sitting on an upturned bucket for forty minutes.
It is the last Saturday in May and the door is up. Somebody two houses down is on their second pass with a mower and the smell of it is coming in with the light. The tub was on the shelf behind the paint, the gray one with the cracked lid, and the socket set was not in it. Nine composition notebooks were.
He has one open on his knee. The handwriting on the first page is younger than his handwriting now, which is a strange thing to notice about yourself.
He reads a few. He does not mean to.
March, the second year: asked God about the same thing again. Feel like I am going in circles. Want to be a better man than this by next spring.
November, the fourth year: same. Read Colossians. Nothing.
August, the sixth year: I am starting to think I write this down so that I will have proof.
That is the one that gets him, because it is true and because he wrote it and then kept going for three more years anyway.
The last entry is a Tuesday in March, two springs back. It stops in the middle of a sentence. Not dramatically. He can tell from the ink that the pen just came off the page and something else happened in the house, and he never came back to it, and the reason he never came back to it is sitting right there in the eight notebooks underneath: every page said the same thing.
Nine years. He was not lazy about it. He wrote in his truck at lunch. He wrote at the kitchen table with the lamp on so he would not wake anybody. He wrote in a hotel in Ohio during his father's last week. And when he stacks it all up and reads it as a body of evidence, which is exactly what he built it to be, the verdict comes back that a man wrote faithfully about standing still.
The mower down the street cuts off. He puts the lid back on the tub.
And you know that tub, though yours may not be paper. It might be a highlighted Bible, or an app with a streak in it, or just the running total you keep in your head of what you have and have not become. You started the record to see something. And what the record showed you, honestly, over years, is a person who keeps records.
The log was never where the growing was going to show
Let me start by taking one accusation off the table, because it walked in with the notebooks and it has no business here.
Nine years of pages that read the same is not a report on your appetite for God. It is a report on what a page can hold. A page can hold what a man noticed about himself on a Tuesday, and what a man notices about himself is almost the last place a change shows up, because he is standing closer to himself than anybody has ever stood to anything.
Ask a farmer where the first year of an orchard goes. Not up. It goes down, out of sight, into ground nobody photographs, and if you dug it up to check you would kill it. The visible inch is the last thing to arrive, and it arrives on top of years that never made it into a single measurement.
You have been growing where you cannot see it, and the fact that you cannot list it is not evidence against it. Ephesians 3:17 says a believer is rooted and grounded in love, and the same passage prays for strength by His Spirit in the inner man, which is a location the pen has never once reached.
And notice what the writing was actually doing, because it was not nothing. It kept him in the room with God for nine years. A man who quits does not fill nine notebooks. The record failed at the one job he gave it, which was to be evidence, and it succeeded quietly at a job he never assigned it, which was to keep him showing up in the truck at lunch, with the lid off, talking to the Lord about the same thing again.
God is not unrighteous to forget
Here is the sentence I want in your hands before you put that tub back on the shelf.
For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.Hebrews 6:10
Read what kind of statement that is. It is not encouragement. It is a statement about God's character: forgetting your work would be an unrighteous act, and He will not perform one. So there is a record, and it is not in the tub, and it is not written in your handwriting, and it did not stop in the middle of a sentence on a Tuesday in March.
The Spirit is the one who takes a line like that off a page and lays it against a man's chest, and Hebrews is written for people who had been at it long enough to get tired. You are not forgotten, and you were not forgotten in the fourth year when the entry said nothing. That is what Hebrews 6:10 rules out by name, and it is His Spirit who makes it land as a fact rather than as a nice thought about God in general.
And look at what He says He remembers. Not insight. Not the depth of an entry. Work, and love, and ministering to people, and He puts it in the present tense at the end: and do minister. He is talking about the hotel in Ohio. He is talking about who got fed and who got driven somewhere and who got sat with, none of which anybody writes down, because a man does not journal about the ordinary things he did for other people. He journals about what he feels he lacks.
You have ministered to people who never once filed it under ministry, and you have been doing it all nine years. Hebrews 6:10 puts that in the present tense on purpose, and it is the Spirit who prompts the ordinary kindness a man has forgotten again by Thursday, so the account He keeps runs longer than the one you closed.
Which means the two records are not even about the same subject.
When reading it back has turned into a case against yourself
There is a version of this that is heavier than tiredness, and I want to name it plainly rather than write around it.
If those nine notebooks have stopped being disappointing and started reading like an indictment, put the lid on the tub and go find a person. That is not a collapse of faith and it is not running out ahead of God. Help that arrives wearing shoes is still God helping, and He has never treated an office and an appointment as competition. A counselor, who will read the nine years beside you and refuse to let you sit as your own judge. A doctor, because a man who has not slept properly since his father's last week gets handed thoughts that are not his own. The friend who has known you through the whole nine years. And if the small hours have turned toward ending it, use 988 tonight, by call or by text, or whatever crisis line answers in your area, and let somebody sit on the garage step with you until it gets light.
Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the Spirit of life in Christ is named in the very next verse as what sets a man free from the law of sin and death. You are already out from under the verdict, and you were out from under it during every entry in that tub.
So set the notebooks down. Not because they were a waste, and not because keeping a record is a fault. Set them down because they were asked to carry something they were never made to carry, and they have been quietly telling you so for nine years.
You have a record kept by God Himself, and it is not the one on your knee. Hebrews 6:10 says He would have to be unrighteous to forget your work and your love, and the Spirit who inspired that line is the one holding the file, so the accounting was never resting on your ability to notice yourself.
And let this be the end of the reading back. Not forever, and not as a rule you now have to keep. Just today: stop opening the tub for evidence. It does not have any, it never had any, and the not having is not a verdict on you.
You are the work, and you are not the auditor of it. Philippians 1:6 says the One who began a good work in you carries it through, and it is His Spirit at work in the inner man, which means the growing has been going on underneath a column of numbers that could not see it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these with the tub still open on the garage floor, before the lid goes back on and it goes behind the paint again. A man reading his own handwriting has no authority of his own and needs none. The authority is Christ's and it is delegated: He has joined you to Himself, He lives in you, and that is what a spoken sentence rides on. Every line here is made out of His word, and the Holy Spirit is what lands an old promise on an upturned bucket in May, so a flat voice at the end of a long read gets it there as surely as a strong one. When any of it shows, and how plainly, is a matter of His timing and not of my record keeping.
- Notebooks in the tub, you are nine years of honest handwriting and you were never the evidence. Hebrews 6:10 says God would have to be unrighteous to forget my work and my love, so the real record has been kept somewhere I have never held, and His Spirit has been writing in it since the first page.
- Verdict that says I have only been standing still and keeping neat notes about it, get off this property. It is written that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and you are going out of this garage in the name of Jesus, because the Holy Spirit has been rooting me in ground no tape measure ever reached.
- Lord, You have not forgotten one hour of these nine years, and You are the One keeping the account. You promised in Your word that the work You began is the work You carry, so I am handing You the reading back, and I am not opening this tub for evidence again today. I am naming the man on this page and thanking You for him, and Your Spirit is growing what I could not measure.
