It is twenty to six on a Saturday in February and the only warm thing in the basement is a space heater with one bar lit.
He is at the card table in his coat with a mug he keeps both hands around. The chest freezer cycles on behind him. Through the window well he can see snow packed gray against the glass, and it will be another hour before there is any light down here that did not come out of a bulb.
The ledger is open in front of him. Hardbound, green cloth, the kind a man buys when he means it. He started it eleven years ago in a hotel room after a conference, and he has kept it faithfully, which nobody would believe about him if they saw the rest of his desk.
Four columns, ruled by hand with a straightedge. Date. What God said. What I did about it. What changed.
Column one is full. Every entry dated, some of them twice a week for a decade. Column two is full and it is good material, honestly good, the kind of thing a man would be glad to leave to his children. Column three is mostly full and gets thin in the years his father was sick.
Column four is where the trouble is.
Column four has eleven years of short entries in it that all say roughly the same thing in different handwriting. Hard to tell. Not sure. Maybe. Ask me later. Some years he skipped it and drew a line through the box, which he told himself was honest and which he now suspects was a way of not looking.
So this morning he did the thing he has been avoiding. He went back to the beginning with a pencil, one entry at a time, and tried to make the fourth column say something. And it will not. He can point at things that happened. He cannot point at a man who is different, or at least he cannot prove one, and proving is what a ledger is for.
He sits back. The heater ticks. Upstairs a floorboard goes as somebody gets up for water.
And that is not only his basement. Yours might be a phone with a habit tracker on it, or a stack of journals in a closet you would rather nobody opened, or nothing written down at all and just the running audit that goes in your head at red lights. Decades in. Faithful, mostly. And the honest answer to what is actually different is a short answer, and the shortness of it has started to feel like a verdict.
The fourth column cannot see where the work is filed
Here is the sentence I want to put under your mug this morning, and I want to be exact about the grammar of it, because the grammar is the whole comfort.
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.Colossians 3:3
Hid. Not slow. Not missing. Not pending. Hid, deliberately, by somebody, somewhere specific: with Christ, in God. That is a location. Paul is not describing a delay in the shipping, he is telling a church where the goods are being kept, and it is not in a place a man can open with a straightedge and a pencil.
You are looking for a life that Scripture says was put somewhere out of your reach on purpose. Colossians 3:3 is written as a finished fact about every believer, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the keeping rather than the reader who does the proving, which is why the fourth column has been coming back blank for eleven years while the thing it was hunting for was never lost.
Now hear what I am not saying. I am not telling you the column is empty because something is wrong with you. There is no verdict in this basement. The record you kept is a good record, kept honestly by a serious man, and the reason it will not add up is a fact about where God files things and not a fact about your obedience.
Mark 4 records a man who scatters seed and then sleeps and rises, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, he knows not how, and the not knowing is written into the account as normal rather than as a failure. His Spirit works underneath the floor of a man's awareness by design. You have been growing in a place you were never issued a key to.
The people who can see it are not you
There is a reason God did not appoint you the auditor of your own soul, and it is not distrust. It is position. Nobody is worse placed to notice a change in a man than the man himself, because he is inside it, and because he grades himself against the version of himself he intended to be rather than the one who walked in eleven years ago.
Ask the people who have known you a long time and let them answer without you finishing their sentences for them. They will not name what you would name. They will say something about how you are with waiters now. Or that you let a sentence go instead of finishing it. Or that there was a stretch of years when they used to brace before they picked up your call, and they cannot remember the last time they braced.
Scripture puts the fruit of the Spirit in a list of things other people are on the receiving end of, and it is the Spirit who grows them rather than the believer who manufactures them. You have been the one carrying that fruit around while other people ate it.
And one plain thing, because a February basement at twenty to six is where this can get heavy. If reading a blank column has taken a man somewhere darker than discouragement, put another person into it today. A doctor, because sleep and thyroid and grief do more to a man's sense of himself than most sermons will admit. A counselor, or a pastor who will take the version with nothing tidied out of it. Involving a human being does not push God's work aside down here; it is one of His instruments and He has used it a very long time. And if the early hours have gone somewhere past regret, into figuring that the upstairs would be lighter without him in it, dial 988 and do not hang up until somebody has come down those stairs.
You were held through every February in that ledger, including the ones where you drew a line through the box. Psalm 139 says the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, and His Spirit did not leave the room in the years the third column got thin.
No tree audits itself in February
Go up the stairs and out to the yard when it gets light. Every tree out there is doing nothing, visibly, and has been doing nothing since November. No leaf, no fruit, no measurable inch. If a tree kept a fourth column it would have eleven Februaries of hard to tell.
Underneath, it is a different report. Root growth in a hardwood does not stop when the top goes quiet, and the whole architecture of what that tree will be able to hold up is being laid in the season when there is nothing to photograph. A young orchard puts most of its early years into the part nobody admires.
You are not stalled, you are rooting, and the difference is invisible from the surface by design. Colossians 2:7 speaks of a believer rooted and built up in Him, written in the passive because somebody else is doing it, and the same Spirit who raised Christ is the one at work below the frost line of a life.
I want to be careful here, because a man like me can turn a mercy into a metric in one sentence. This is not a promise that a specific fruit shows up on a specific branch on a schedule I have no business handing you. It is a statement about where the work happens and who is doing it. Nobody on this page is putting a clock on God.
Ephesians 3:16 asks that a believer be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man, and the inner man is precisely the part no ledger has a column for. You have been strengthened in the place the ledger cannot open.
So close the ledger. Not because it was wrong to keep it, and not as a rule for anybody else. Close it because it was answering a question God never asked you to answer, and because your hands are needed for something better this morning.
This is yours right now, in the cold, with the fourth column exactly as blank as it was when you sat down. Colossians 3:3 was written to ordinary believers who could not verify a word of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping what it names, so nothing here waits on you assembling the evidence first.
Put both hands back around the mug. Say the name of Jesus out loud once in the empty basement, at the volume of a man talking to somebody who is in the room, because He is.
You are hidden with Christ in God this morning, and hidden is not the same as absent. It is written in that verse as a present location and not a future one, and His Spirit is the seal on it according to Ephesians 1:13, which means the safest thing about you is the part you cannot get a look at.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these where the ledger was, before you go up the stairs. A man who belongs to Christ says a thing like this on borrowed ground: the weight in it is His authority, not a man's record, and eleven Februaries of ruled paper move that not one inch in either direction. Colossians 3 says the life is hidden with Christ in God, which is exactly why the fourth column has never been able to see it. Each of these three has a written line holding it up, and carrying a sentence up out of a cold basement is what the Holy Spirit does, and a voice that comes out flat at twenty to six carries it every bit as well. When any of this shows above ground is set by His timing, and that was never going to be printed in the book.
- Column of empty boxes for eleven Februaries, you are ink and ruled paper and you cannot see where my life is kept. Colossians 3:3 says that life is hidden with Christ in God, and hidden is a place, so I am closing you and leaving the accounting to the One holding it.
- Fear that eleven years grew nothing, get out of this basement in the name of Jesus. Colossians 2 has a believer rooted and built up in Him by somebody other than himself, and the Holy Spirit has been working under the frost line of me the whole time. You have had the run of every winter down here and the tenancy ends this morning.
- Lord, You have been keeping the account I was never able to read, and I am handing You that fourth column with both hands. Colossians 3 says my life is hidden with Christ in You, and Your Spirit is the seal on it, so I am going upstairs to put the coffee on instead of digging the tree up to check the roots.
