It is twenty to midnight on a Tuesday in November and she is standing in front of the refrigerator with the door shut.
She is not getting anything. The kitchen is dark except for the light above the sink, which she left on when she came down, and the little orange glow off the clock on the stove. The house is cold in the way a house gets when the heat has been down since ten.
On the refrigerator door, held with two magnets, one from a plumbing company and one shaped like a pear, there is a chart.
She printed it in August. Seven columns, a row for each week, boxes small enough that she had to use a fine pen. And in every box, going back to the third week of August, an X in blue ballpoint, some of them neat and some practically a scribble because she did them standing up with her coat still on.
Eleven weeks. Seventy seven boxes. Every single one of them true.
And tonight she did the thing again.
Not a slip in a technical sense. Not a gray area she could argue about with herself. The thing, the actual thing, the one the whole chart exists because of, at about nine forty on a Tuesday evening, and she knew what she was doing the entire way through.
So she has come down at twenty to midnight and she is standing here.
And then she takes hold of the corner and pulls it off the door. The pear magnet goes across the floor and under the stove and the plumbing one lands flat and skids. She does not fold the paper. She crumples it hard, with two hands, the way you crumple something you are angry with, and she puts it in the trash and then she pushes it down under the coffee grounds so that nobody will see it in the morning.
Then she stands there with her hands on the counter and she says out loud, to nobody, "Well, that's that."
That is the sentence I want to stay with. Well, that's that. Because in it, seventy seven true days have just gone into the trash along with the paper, and she believes it. She believes that as of nine forty tonight she is back where she was in the third week of August, that the eleven weeks were provisional, and that they have now been withdrawn.
And you know this kitchen. You have had a Tuesday. Maybe not this Tuesday, maybe yours was last spring, but you know the sound the paper makes and you know what a person says to an empty room afterward.
Two things are true and I am not going to drop either one
I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this page that makes the Tuesday small, and there is another version that makes the eleven weeks small, and both of those are lies and neither one helps.
So, plainly. What happened tonight was real. It was not a hiccup and it was not a wobble, and I am not going to call it a learning experience. She knew what was happening at nine forty and so do you. That matters, and treating it as though it does not is not kindness, it is dismissal wearing kindness like a coat.
And also, the eleven weeks were real. Seventy seven days happened. They were not a rehearsal that has now been canceled. A day when you did not do the thing is a day when you did not do the thing, permanently, in history, and nothing that happens later reaches back and unhappens it.
Ecclesiastes 3 says God requires that which is past, and the Spirit keeps a written line like that from turning sentimental.
You have eleven true weeks and one honest night in your hands at the same time, and both of them stay. Nothing you actually lived gets deleted by nine forty on a Tuesday.
The chart came off the door because it could only hold one of those two facts. That is the trouble with a grid. A grid records a run and cannot record a life, so the moment there is a blank box the whole document turns into an accusation and the only thing to do with it is tear it down.
You are not standing in front of a scoreboard, and you never were, even in August when the X's were going on nicely. Psalm 130 says that if the Lord should mark iniquities nobody at all could stand, and it is His Spirit who makes that written line a relief rather than a threat, which means the accounting you were running was never the one He keeps.
If thou shouldest mark iniquities
Here is the passage, and I want you to hear the second half, because the first half is the one that gets quoted at people.
If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.Psalm 130:3-4
Mark is a bookkeeping word. It means to write it in the column, to keep the tally, to hold the record open. And the psalmist looks at that and says: if that is how You work, nobody stands. Not the woman at the refrigerator. Not the man who wrote it. Nobody.
And then, but. But there is forgiveness with Thee.
Notice where the forgiveness is kept. It is with Him, the way a doctor has hands, not something produced occasionally when the case is strong enough. He was not out of it at nine forty and He was not out of it at eleven forty either.
You are forgiven tonight, not tomorrow when you have got a clean day behind you to make it look better. First John 1 says He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and it is His Spirit who applies that written promise to an actual Tuesday, so the cleansing is not waiting on a fresh row of boxes.
And look at the last clause, because it is strange and it is the point. That thou mayest be feared. Forgiveness is what produces reverence. Not leniency, and not lowered standards, and not pretending it did not matter. It is being fully seen at nine forty and fully received at twenty to midnight, and something in a person goes quiet and reverent in front of that, and that is the thing that actually changes a woman. It has never once been the chart.
You have not been let off, you have been forgiven, and those are different things. The word says He is faithful and just, both at once, which means nothing about tonight was minimized in order for it to be dealt with, and the Spirit is the one who makes a forgiven person more careful rather than less.
What the tearing down was really about
Let me say the thing I think was actually happening at the refrigerator.
The paper did not come off the door because of a rule. It came off because looking at it hurt. Seventy seven X's beside one blank box is not a record anymore, it is a photograph of a person you thought you had become. So the paper went under the coffee grounds so nobody would see it, which tells the whole story: it was not about the thing. It was about being seen having done it.
That is shame, and shame is not repentance, and it is important to know which one you are holding at midnight because they feel almost identical and they go in opposite directions. Repentance turns toward God with it. Shame hides it under the coffee grounds. Repentance says the true thing out loud. Shame writes well, that's that and goes up to bed.
You are welcome to come to Him with it exactly as it happened, unedited and at midnight. Hebrews 4 says we come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need, and boldness like that is the Spirit's gift to somebody who feels like the last person entitled to it.
And if this is the part of the page where you have gone quiet, then hear me. If what happened tonight is doing you damage, or landing on somebody else who sleeps in this house, put a person alongside you: a doctor, because some of what happens at nine forty on a Tuesday is a body and not a soul; a counselor who has sat through this exact Tuesday with somebody else and did not flinch; a pastor, if you have one. And if the nights have started running somewhere past regret, if standing at this counter has turned into wondering whether the house would sleep easier with nobody at it, call or text 988 before you go up the stairs, or the crisis line for your part of the state. Hands and appointments are not a lower road than prayer. They are God, working through people who have both.
So go and get it out of the trash. Not the paper. Leave the paper. Go and get the eleven weeks out of the trash, because they went in there by mistake and they were never yours to throw away.
You are not back at the beginning, and nobody with authority over this has put you there. Psalm 130 promised that there is forgiveness with Him, and His Spirit carries that written promise into an actual kitchen at midnight, so the only ledger with any standing has one entry in it and the entry is forgiven.
Now say the true thing out loud. All of it, at nine forty, with no adjustment. Not because saying it purchases anything, but because it is what a person does with a real thing in front of a real God, and He was already there when it happened.
This is yours right now, in a cold kitchen, with the pear magnet under the stove. First John 1 says He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse, and the same Spirit who moved a man to write that is standing in this room tonight, so what you are receiving is not conditional on how the rest of the week goes.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the kitchen before you go up. The right to say them belongs to you and it never came off a chart: Christ has taken up residence in this woman and this woman lives in Him, which is why a sentence spoken at a dark counter is more than talking to yourself. Scripture holds all three of them up, and not what kind of night it has been, and the Holy Spirit takes the words up the stairs ahead of you, so a voice that cracks on the first line reaches as far as a level one. He may answer tomorrow in a way nobody standing in this kitchen would have picked, and that part stays with Him.
- Chart in the trash under the coffee grounds, you are eleven weeks of true days. Psalm 130 says that if the Lord marked iniquities nobody could stand, but that there is forgiveness with Him, and that is what is on this refrigerator door tonight instead of a grid.
- Shame that says I am back at the third week of August, get out of this kitchen. Psalm 103 says He has not dealt with me after my sins, and His Spirit has not stopped working for one hour of the eleven weeks or of tonight, so out you go, in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, You are the one who does not hold the record open, and Scripture says there is forgiveness with You so that You may be feared. Thank You that Your Spirit is in this kitchen at midnight and not waiting for a clean sheet of paper, and I am handing You tonight and the seventy seven days in the same hand.
