It is 7:20 in the morning and he is in the car with the engine off.
The lot is gravel and mostly empty. The sign out front has movable letters and somebody spelled a word wrong three weeks ago and nobody has fixed it. The side door is propped with a brick. Inside, the coffee is already going, because it is always already going, because there is a man in his seventies who gets here before everybody and nobody ever asked him to.
His guitar case is across the back seat. His in-ears are in a sandwich bag in the cup holder because that is where they live. The engine is ticking as it cools and he has not moved in about four minutes.
Because Friday night happened.
He is not going to explain what Friday night was, and I am not going to ask. It was real. It was not an accident and it was not somebody else's fault, and he made four small decisions in a row that he could see clearly at the time. It was the thing. The one he thought was behind him. Eleven weeks of nothing, and then Friday.
He has already done Saturday. Saturday was the apology to God at two in the afternoon in the garage, the one that comes out flat because he has made it before. Saturday was the resolution, and the deleting, and the long walk. Saturday was fine.
Sunday is the problem. Because at 8:45 he has to walk up front with a guitar and open his mouth and lead a room of people into the presence of God, and the whole way up the two steps to that platform he is going to be doing arithmetic about Friday.
He has his phone in his hand. He is composing the text. Something about a stomach thing, and the other guy could cover, and honestly the other guy is better at the second song anyway.
Then a woman comes across the gravel with a diaper bag and a travel mug and waves at him through the windshield, big, both arms, the way you wave at somebody you are actually glad to see, and he waves back and puts the phone down.
You know this parking lot. Yours might be a Tuesday and a kitchen instead of a Sunday and a platform. It is any morning you have to go be a person in front of people who do not know about the night before last, and the whole way there you are running the same calculation: whether what happened has canceled everything that came before it.
Friday was real and I am not going to shrink it
Let me start where a page like this usually will not.
What happened Friday mattered. It was not nothing. It was not a stumble that a warm sentence dissolves, and I am not going to hand you the version of grace that pats the top of your head and tells you it was never a big deal, because you saw it happen and you know better, and being lied to comfortably is not what you came here for.
Somebody was hurt or could have been. Something got spent that you cannot get back. The four small decisions were yours. All of that stands, and I am not moving any of it.
And it did not put you back at the beginning.
Both of those are true in the same morning, and the whole rest of this page lives in that sentence. You are held by a God who is honest about Friday and is not finished with you because of it. 1 John 1 says if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive them and to cleanse us, which is written and is not a mood, and it was His Spirit doing the convicting in that garage on Saturday afternoon, which is not the behavior of a God who is done.
That conviction, by the way, is the tell. Nobody grieves over a house they have moved out of.
The counter did not go back to one
Here is where the real damage happens, and it does not happen on Friday. It happens at 7:20 on Sunday.
Because somewhere along the way most of us picked up a picture of this life as a counter on a wall. Eleven weeks clean, and then Friday takes the counter to zero, and now the whole thing sits back where it sat four years ago, and everything God did in between has been repossessed.
That picture is not in the Bible anywhere. Not once.
It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.Lamentations 3:22-23
Read what is new every morning. Not you. Not your record. His mercies, arriving fresh, on a schedule that has nothing to do with the quality of your night. You are met by mercies that were already new before you woke up in that house on Saturday. That is the written word, and it is His Spirit who brings the morning into a person, which is why something in you got up and did Saturday at all.
And notice who the verse says the faithfulness belongs to. Great is Thy faithfulness. Not great was mine. The whole line was written by a man sitting in the ruins of a burned city, which is worth remembering the next time you decide your situation is uniquely disqualifying.
Philippians 1:6 puts the keeping in the hands of the One who began it, and His Spirit does not restart the file every time a man has a Friday. You have not lost the work God did in eleven weeks, and you were never the one holding it in place.
The walk to the microphone
So what does he do at 8:45?
He goes. Not because it does not matter, and not to pretend. He goes because a man just met by mercy is exactly the right person to sing about it, and because sitting in the car protects nothing except his own image of himself.
But going is not the same as hiding. There is a difference and it is worth naming. If Friday involved another person, if there is harm somebody else is carrying, that gets brought into the light with an actual human being, and soon. If it involves money that is not yours, or a promise you made in front of witnesses, that has a real world shape and the real world shape is part of the repentance.
And you do not have to say it from a stage. You do not owe a congregation your worst night. You have a Father who already knows the whole of it and never once required a public performance of your shame. Psalm 32 says the man is blessed whose sin is covered, and it describes telling God rather than telling a room, and His Spirit carries a confession that only one other person will ever hear.
Then the plain paragraph. If Friday nights have a shape to them, put somebody in this with you who is not a bandmate and is not a group chat. A counselor, and the one after that already written on a calendar before you leave the first. A doctor, because bodies and appetites and sleep are not a separate department from any of this. A pastor who gets it with nothing edited out. And if a morning after has ever run somewhere past regret, if the arithmetic in this car has started to include whether the band would have an easier Sunday without you on the platform, call 988 today, or the crisis line listed for your city, and have somebody sitting in that passenger seat before you hang up. That is not a man announcing his faith ran out. That is repentance the day it grows hands and a calendar.
So open the car door.
You are met this morning by mercies that were made new while you were asleep, and they were not issued on the basis of your Saturday. Lamentations 3:23 says new every morning and puts the faithfulness on God's side of the ledger, and it is His Spirit who brings that word into a gravel parking lot at 7:24 with the engine ticking.
Do you feel how much that changes about the two steps up to the platform? He was going to walk up there carrying eleven weeks that had been repossessed and a debt he was going to work off over the next month by being extra sincere. None of that is real. The work God did in those eleven weeks is still in him this morning. It did not go anywhere on Friday, because it was never being held in place by his performance.
And I want to be careful, because there is a version of this that turns into permission, and I refuse to hand you that. Nothing here makes Friday smaller. Nothing here says the next one is fine because mercy is on a schedule. Mercy is not a budget you draw against; it is a Person who keeps coming toward you, and people who understand that get less careless, not more.
You are still in the middle of a work, right now, in this car, with Friday exactly as real as it actually was. God put the beginning and the carrying and the finishing all on His own side in Philippians 1, and the Spirit is the one doing it, so the honest thing and the hopeful thing are standing here together and neither one has to leave.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car before you open the door. Out loud, because the standing to say them was given to you and Friday night got no vote on it: Christ at home in a man who has had a bad week, and that man at home in Christ. Scripture holds every line up, and getting them across the gravel is the Holy Spirit's job and not your throat's, so a voice that is embarrassed reaches exactly as far as a confident one. However He answers over the next eleven weeks, that part is His, and it goes over the gravel with no conditions attached to it.
- Friday night, you are real and you were never the end of what God is doing in me. Lamentations 3 says His compassions never fail and the mercies come new with every morning, and this one arrived on His schedule and not on the strength of my Saturday.
- Fear that I am a fraud walking up two steps to a microphone, you have no claim on this car and no seat in it, and in the name of Jesus, out you go. Philippians 1:6 hands the beginning and the finishing of this to the One who started it, and His Spirit did not close the file at eleven weeks and open a fresh one.
- Lord, Your mercies met me here in the gravel before I had anything to show You, and I am getting out of the car and going in. I thank You that Lamentations 3 promised new mercies and never a clean record out of me, and Your Spirit is going up those two steps with me at 8:45.
