Never UndoneProverbs 24:16

The Counter Back to One

This message is for the woman resetting a counter on her phone to day one for the fifth time this year

She is in the car in the grocery store parking lot with the engine off and the phone in her lap.

The cart she pushed out here is already in the corral. The trunk is loaded. There is a rotisserie chicken in a plastic dome on the passenger seat filling the whole car with a smell that would be comforting under other circumstances.

The app is open. The number is 47.

There is a little green shoot next to the number that grows as the days go up. At thirty it turned into something with three leaves and told her, in a cheerful font, that she was doing amazing.

Underneath the number is a button that says reset, and her thumb is over it.

Thursday happened. She is not going to think about Thursday in a parking lot with a chicken. But Thursday happened, and it happened for about ninety minutes, and it was the same as all the other times, and the counter does not know about it yet.

That is the strange, private thing about a counter. It keeps counting until you tell it. It still says 47, and the 47 is a lie, and correcting the lie is a thing she has to do with her own thumb.

January. March. Twice in June, which she does not like to think about. And now.

Fifth time this year.

She holds the phone. A man comes out with a case of water on his shoulder and drives off. A cart rolls four feet and stops on its own.

She could delete the app. She has thought about that.

She presses reset.

The number goes to zero, and the shoot goes back to being a seed in a little brown circle, and the app says, in the same cheerful font, day one.

She sits there with her hands in her lap and does not start the car for a while.

And you know that button, because it is not always an app. It is a date written in the front of a Bible. It is a sponsor's number you did not call, or a Monday, or a promise made in a hospital parking lot. The number went back to zero. And somewhere in the thirty seconds after it did, something said to you, quietly and reasonably: so did you.

The number is not the work

Let me say the honest thing first, because a page that starts with comfort here is not worth reading.

Thursday was real. It cost something. Ninety minutes is ninety minutes, and there may be a person on the other side of it who has no idea, and there may be a version where somebody does know and it landed on them. Nothing here is going to call that nothing. The reason it hurts is that it matters, and the hurt is not the enemy in the car.

And nothing here is a permission slip either. Nobody who loves you wants that, and neither do you, or you would not be sitting in a parking lot with a chicken going cold.

You are a person in the middle of a real work, and you were in the middle of it on Thursday too. Proverbs 24:16 describes a just man who falls seven times and gets up, and the word just is applied to him in the same sentence as the falling, and it is the Spirit of God who does the raising in a person rather than a run of good days.

For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.Proverbs 24:16

Read it again, because most people have only ever heard the first half. The contrast is not between a man who falls and a man who does not. It is between a man who falls and gets up and a man who stays down. Seven falls are written into the description of the righteous one. Seven.

You have a verse with your Thursday inside it, and it was written there long before your thumb went anywhere near that button. That is what is written in Proverbs 24:16, and the same Spirit who put those words in the book is at work in a car in a parking lot, so the falling is inside the description and not outside the family.

Nobody put you back at the beginning

Here is what the app did. It set an integer to zero. That is the entire event.

Here is what the app cannot do. It cannot reach back into the forty seven days and take them out of your life. Those days happened. In one of them you got through an afternoon that used to take you down. In another you said a true thing out loud to somebody. In another you did nothing remarkable and it still counted, because most of the work is unremarkable.

None of that got deleted at 4:40 in a parking lot. A number went to zero. A woman did not.

You are not back at the beginning, and you were never in a system where a fall subtracts what God has already built. His word says the path of the just is as the shining light that shines more and more, Proverbs 4:18, and the Holy Spirit does not restart a person He has been forming, because He is not keeping the kind of record an app keeps.

This is the difference between a streak and a road. A streak is fragile by design, and that is fine for water intake. A road is not fragile. If a person sits down on a road, or falls down on it, or goes backward on it for ninety minutes, the road is still the same road, at roughly the same place, and the way home has not moved.

You have been walking for years and you were walking on Thursday, and the ground under you did not turn into different ground. Scripture calls repentance a turning rather than a rebuilding, and the Spirit is the one who turns a person, which is why the getting up can happen in a parked car in less time than it takes to read this.

The lie shows up about thirty seconds later

Watch what actually happens after a reset, because the fall and the accusation are two different events and only one of them is yours.

The fall took ninety minutes on Thursday. The accusation takes about four seconds, usually in a quiet moment afterward, and it does not sound like an attack. It sounds like maturity. It sounds like finally being honest with yourself. It says some version of: this is what you actually are, and the forty seven days were the performance.

That voice is not the Holy Spirit and it is not your conscience. Conviction is specific and it points at a thing and gives you somewhere to go with it. The other one is general, it points at you, and it gives you nowhere to go at all.

And now the plainest part of this page. If the pattern is eating your health, your money or your sleep, or if the cost of it keeps landing on people who share your address, then a person put beside you is part of the work God is doing here, never a detour around it. Book a doctor, because withdrawal and sleep and pain and a flattened mood are physical facts with physical answers, and a body running on empty will lose Thursday again on Thursday's terms. Book a counselor as well, somebody who can sit with the same ninety minutes week after week without going pale. Then tell one human being the true version tonight, not the tidy summary you would hand a stranger by the cart corral. And if the silence after you pressed reset has turned darker than shame, if staying has started to feel like the optional part of the week, dial or text 988 before you turn the key, or whatever crisis line answers where you live, and do not spend tonight in an empty house.

You are heard in the car and you were heard on Thursday, before you had cleaned anything up. His word says if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, 1 John 1:9, and it is the Holy Spirit who carries a person into that sentence, so nobody has to arrive at God presentable in order to arrive at all.

The breakthrough

So put the phone face down on the passenger seat next to the chicken.

This is yours right now, in a parking lot, with a zero on the screen and Thursday still in the room. The word promised that a just man falls and rises again, and His Spirit is the one who raises, so what is being handed to you here is not a fresh start, it is the same work continuing without a gap.

Not a clean slate. Something better than a clean slate, because a clean slate is empty. What is on the table is an unbroken one, with forty seven days on it and a Thursday on it and a Friday on it, all of it inside a work that God began and has not once suspended.

You were kept through Thursday, and you have no obligation to feel restored before the rising is allowed to be real. It is written that He is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless, Jude 24, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing the keeping, which means the keeping did not clock out at ninety minutes and pick back up when you were sorry.

Start the car. Get the chicken home. The rising is not an event you have to schedule.

Declare this over yourself

Speak these where you are sitting, phone face down on the seat, engine still off. The right to say them was delegated to you by the One who holds it outright, and a woman in Christ still has it in a parking lot at twenty to five, because delegated authority does not climb on day forty seven or drop on day zero. Every one of the three lines below is cut out of Scripture and stands on it, and the words travel on the Holy Spirit rather than on the strength of the voice saying them, so say them hoarse if hoarse is what Thursday left you. What happens on the road in front of you is not written on this page. The outcome is His, and I am glad of it.

  1. Counter on my phone, you are back to zero and I am not. Proverbs 24:16 says a just man falls seven times and rises up again, and the forty seven days are still in my life and so is Thursday, and neither one of them is the measure of what God is building.
  2. Accusation that I am back at the beginning, get out of this car. Five resets you have ridden shotgun this year, and in the name of Jesus your seat is gone at twenty to five today. Proverbs 4:18 calls the path of the just a shining light that shines more and more, and the Holy Spirit does not restart a person He has been forming for years.
  3. Lord, You are the one who raises, and the rising was never mine to manufacture. I thank You, because You promised to keep me and to present me faultless, and Your Spirit was holding me on Thursday at the exact hour I would say You were not. I am standing up now and I am driving home.
