The dryer is still going and she is sitting on the laundry room floor with her back against it.
Eleven forty on a Tuesday night. The good hoodie, the one she wears when she is not planning to be seen. The house asleep. A basket of somebody's socks half folded beside her knee, and she has been sitting here long enough that the floor has stopped being cold.
Two Sundays ago she stood up in front of that church and said God had set her free.
She had not planned to. The pastor asked if anybody had anything, and something got her out of the pew and up the aisle, and she told them. Not the details. Just that there had been a thing for a long time, and that it had a grip on her, and that it did not anymore. People stood up. A woman she barely knows found her in the parking lot afterward and held onto her hand and cried. Her name went in the bulletin the next week under Testimonies, spelled right, with the date.
That bulletin is still on the passenger seat of her car. She saw it tonight when she went out for the trash and did not touch it.
Because today was Tuesday. And whatever it is for her, she did it. Not by accident. Not swept along. She saw it coming from about four in the afternoon and she watched herself go toward it the way you watch a car pull out of a side street, and then it was nine, and then it was over, and then she was standing in her own kitchen with the light off.
Now she is on the floor with the dryer buzzing at her back, running the same sentence over and over, and it is not a prayer. It is arithmetic.
Two Sundays. Two weeks and one day of clean. Gone.
Back to zero, she thinks. Back to the start. And underneath that, worse, the thing she would not say to anybody in that church: that she stood up in front of good people and said something that turned out not to be true, and that they hugged her, and that she let them.
And you know this floor. Yours might be a car in a driveway with the engine off, or the edge of a bathtub, or a chair in an office at ten past six with everybody gone. You said it out loud. Maybe to a room, maybe to one friend, maybe only to God. And then the day came, and you went back, and now you are doing the arithmetic instead of praying, and the number keeps coming out the same.
The Tuesday was real and it did not delete the Sunday
I am going to hold two things at once here, and I need her to let me, because most of what gets said about a night like this drops one of them.
The first is that Tuesday was real. It was not nothing. It cost her something, it took something out of the week, and if anybody else got hurt in it then that is a real debt with a real name on it. I am not going to shrink that down to make her feel better on a laundry room floor, because a comfort that requires the truth to get smaller is not a comfort, it is a sedative.
And the second thing is that the arithmetic she is running is not from God. Back to zero is a number, and God is not counting in that direction.
You have not been returned to the beginning, and nothing about tonight put you back on the first page. Psalm 37:24 says that though a righteous person falls, they are not utterly cast down, because the Lord upholds them with His hand, and it is His Spirit doing the upholding on a floor at eleven forty at night.
Look at how Scripture talks about a person who falls. Not as a machine that resets. As somebody being held.
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again.Proverbs 24:16
That is not a permission slip and I am not handing it to her as one. It is a description of what a righteous life actually looks like from the inside, written down so that nobody would mistake a fall for a disqualification. The falling is in the verse. So is the rising, and the rising is not described as a technique.
You are still the person God did that work in, and the work did not evaporate at nine o'clock this evening. His word says the good work belongs to the One who began it, Philippians 1:6, and His Spirit has not put down the thing He is carrying.
There is an Advocate and He is speaking right now
Here is the verse I would put in her hand if I were sitting on that floor with her, and I would want her to notice the tense in it.
My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.1 John 2:1
Read the first half. That ye sin not. John does not soften it and neither will I. The letter wants her free of it, and so does God, and so does she, and none of that is negotiated down.
Then read the second half, because it was written for a Tuesday. If any man sin. Not if a bad person sins. If any. And what is waiting there is not a penalty desk. It is an Advocate, present tense, already in the room where it counts, already speaking.
You have an Advocate with the Father and He is speaking about you right now, on this floor, tonight. 1 John 2:1 says it in the present tense, and the Greek word behind advocate is the same word Jesus used for the Comforter, so the Spirit alongside her and the Son before the Father are doing the same work from two directions.
Think about what an advocate actually does. He does not deny what happened. He stands up and he speaks on the basis of something that is already true, and what is already true here is His own righteousness and His own blood, and neither of those got weaker on Tuesday.
You were represented in that room the whole time it was happening, and you were never once undefended. Hebrews 7:25 says He lives to make intercession, His word, His promise, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that live in a laundry room instead of staying on a page.
What the Tuesday costs, and who is carrying it
Now let me be honest about the rest of it, because this is where a comfortable article would stop and I am not going to.
If somebody got hurt, that has to be dealt with, and dealt with by the person who did it. Not managed alone in the dark and not covered by a good testimony two Sundays ago. Owning it plainly is not the opposite of grace. It is what a person does who is standing on grace and not on their record.
And a human being brought in close is not a way of stepping around God. It is very often the shape His work takes. A doctor, because a body is involved in this further than most preaching admits, and an evening that starts building at four in the afternoon usually has something physical underneath it. A counselor, who can hear the same pattern in March and again in June without once flinching. One friend who holds all of it, not the version that fit into a testimony. And if a night on that tile has stopped being about shame and started sounding like a way out of everything, text or call 988 before the dryer finishes its cycle, or a crisis line near her, and get someone close enough to sit on that floor until it is light. That is not a change of subject. At eleven forty on a Tuesday it is the subject.
You are not carrying this alone, and you were not carrying it alone at four in the afternoon when you saw it coming. Scripture calls Him the God who is near to the brokenhearted, Psalm 34:18, and the Spirit answers to the name Helper because Jesus gave it to Him and because helping is the thing He actually does, not because it is a fine thing to be called.
So put the arithmetic down. Not the honesty. The arithmetic.
This is yours right now, on the laundry room floor, with the dryer buzzing and Tuesday exactly as real as it was an hour ago. 1 John 2:1 says we have an advocate with the Father, present tense, and it is the Spirit of the living God who takes that sentence off a page and puts it into a dark room at eleven forty at night. Not one word of it is waiting on her to feel forgiven first.
Hear what is actually being said to her. Not that it did not happen. Not that she should try harder starting Wednesday. That there is a Person speaking for her at this moment, and He has been speaking the whole time she has been sitting here counting.
You are His, and you were His on Sunday and you were His on Tuesday, and the testimony you gave was not a lie. Philippians 1:6 says the good work belongs to Him and He is the one carrying it on, and His Spirit has not stopped carrying it. What she told that church was true about what God had done. It was never a contract she signed. God is not counting the days and He is not losing any of them either, and He has never held her two weeks up beside somebody else's to see whose held.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing, with the overhead light on and the dryer still turning behind you. Christ in you is not a mood, and it did not switch itself off at nine o'clock tonight: the right to talk like this was handed over by Him, and one Tuesday has no machinery for taking it back. Every line below is built out of what is written, and a said thing lives because the Holy Spirit makes it live rather than because the voice was steady, so a woman speaking through shame is carried exactly as far as a woman speaking with confidence. And they go up the way the Lord Himself prayed in Gethsemane, not my will but Yours, because what He does with Tuesday from here is His and we are glad of it.
- Tuesday night on the laundry room floor, you are one evening and you cost me something real, and you were never the verdict on the whole work. Psalm 37:24 says the Lord upholds a person who falls, and I am upheld on this floor tonight and not cast down.
- Fear that the testimony I gave was a lie, get out. Since nine o'clock you have had the run of this house and your lease expires tonight, in the name of Jesus, because 1 John 2:1 says we have an advocate with the Father, and His Spirit is speaking for me in the room where it counts.
- Lord, You are the One who is speaking for me while I sit here counting, and You have not stopped. Your word promised an advocate for anyone who sins, and Your Spirit is the Helper You named, and I am telling You the truth about today with no arithmetic in my hands. I thank You, and I am getting up and turning the light on.
