The dew has not burned off yet and the yard smells like cut grass from somebody else's mower two houses down.
He is at the picnic table in a sweater with his coffee, and there is a card on the boards in front of him. He laminated it. That is the detail he would rather not have to defend later, but it is true: he took it to the office supply place on a Tuesday and paid the four dollars, because a thing that matters should not get rained on.
It is a schedule. His own handwriting, printed neat, four sections.
The first block is temper. Home first, then the drive, then work, in that order, because he decided the house comes before the office and he was proud of that reasoning. The second block is the phone at night. The third is his father, one line long, rewritten more than the other three put together. The fourth is prayer, with a number of minutes on it.
Down the right side, in a narrower column, are the dates. Not deadlines exactly. He would want you to know that. Targets. And at the bottom, in capitals, the sentence he wrote last November on a good night: BY CHRISTMAS, A DIFFERENT MAN.
This morning he read it out loud. He does not know why. Maybe to hear whether it still had any life in it.
And he got as far as the second line and stopped, because his own voice in his own backyard was saying something out loud that had only ever lived on paper, and out loud it sounded like a man handing God a project timeline. Like a foreman. Like somebody scheduling a harvest.
He put the card down. His son's bike is on its side by the fence where it has been since Thursday. The mower two houses down changes pitch as it turns.
He sits there with his hands flat on the boards and thinks: I have been managing my own soul with a laminated card, and I did not hear it until today.
And you have a version of that card, and it may not be laminated. It might be the note in your phone with the year at the top. It might be the thing you said to God in the car in January with a real date attached. It might just be the sentence that runs under everything, the one that goes: by the time this is over, I will be somebody else. You are not a fool for wanting it. Wanting it is one of the most honest things about you. But you have started to hear how it sounds, and that is why you are reading this instead of rewriting the third block again.
In returning and rest, and ye would not
There is a verse in Isaiah where God says the thing plainly and then reports, in the same breath, that the people declined it.
For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.Isaiah 30:15
The context matters and it is uncomfortably close to a picnic table. Judah is under threat, and instead of returning they make arrangements. They go down to Egypt. They count horses. They build a plan with a schedule in it, because a plan can be held in the hand and returning cannot.
And ye would not. Not because they were wicked in that moment. Because rest felt like doing nothing, and doing nothing felt like dying.
You are being offered strength this morning in a form that does not look like effort, and Scripture puts it in exactly those words. Isaiah 30:15 names quietness and confidence as where the strength actually is, and it is the Spirit who supplies it rather than the man who schedules it, so the thing you have been trying to generate has been standing in front of you as a gift the whole time.
I want to be careful, because a man like me can hear that as one more instruction and go home and laminate rest. That is not what this is. Rest here is not a technique with a correct form. It is what it looks like to stop making arrangements for a rescue that has already been offered.
Zechariah 4:6 is written flat, not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts, and it was said to a man in the middle of a building project. You have His Spirit for this, and He was never a supplement to your own effort.
The card is not the problem, the fear underneath it is
Now let me say the true thing about that laminated card, because I have made a few of my own and I know what is in them.
A schedule is not a sin. A schedule is a way of not needing anybody. If I can name the change, date it, and break it into blocks, the whole business stays inside a system I run, and nobody, including God, has to be waited on. Waiting is the intolerable part. Not effort. Effort is comfortable, effort is a Tuesday. Waiting means the outcome is out of my hands and in His, and a man who has spent his life being the one who is prepared does not know how to sit in that.
You are already inside the work, and you were inside it long before you printed a card. Philippians 2:13 says God is at work in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure, and the willing is His work too, so the desire that sent you to the office supply place on a Tuesday was already His Spirit moving in a man who thought he was moving himself.
One plain paragraph, because a morning like this can go somewhere I do not want to leave you sitting alone in. If reading your own card out loud has taken you past embarrassment into something a good deal heavier, get a person next to you today. A doctor, because poor sleep and grief and a body that is not right will have a man believing things about his soul that are simply not true. A counselor, and a pastor who hears the unedited version instead of the presentable one. And if your evenings have started arriving at the idea that the people in your house would do better with you gone, dial 988 today, or text it, or a crisis line near the yard you are sitting in, and keep the call open until somebody is there beside you. Reaching for that help is not what a man does instead of trusting God. It is one of the plain, unglamorous means He uses to carry a person.
You have been carried through every quarter on that card, including the ones you crossed out and rewrote. Lamentations 3:23 says His mercies are new every morning, written in the plural and without conditions, and it is His Spirit who has been doing the carrying in the months you were sure nothing was happening.
The mercy is that it is only today
Here is what I think the card actually costs a man, and it is not accuracy. It is weight.
A calendar from here to Christmas puts every day between now and then on a man's back at once, at a picnic table, with the coffee going cold. Jesus said the day has enough in it of its own, which sounds like a limit and is in fact a mercy: He hands a man one day's worth of anything to carry and refuses to hand him the rest.
Today has a degree in it. Not a program. Not a stage in a sequence you are meant to track. One degree, this morning, in a yard with the dew still on it, and it belongs to you, and you did not schedule it.
You are being changed today, and the today is the whole of what has been given to you to receive. Second Corinthians 3:18 is written in the present continuous, are being transformed, and the same verse says it comes from the Lord who is the Spirit, so this morning's portion arrived without a date attached to it and without you arranging for delivery.
I am not going to tell you what you are like later. Not by Christmas, not by any month you could name, and if I did you should stop reading me. Nobody here gets to hand you that, and the ones who do are selling something. What is honestly yours is the degree standing in front of you right now, and the One who has the rest of it.
Psalm 46:10 says be still, and know that I am God, and stillness there is not passivity but the posture of somebody who has stopped negotiating. The same Spirit who moved a psalmist to write it is the one at work in a quiet man. You are held while you are still, and the stillness is not lost time.
So take the card off your soul. Not off your calendar, if the blocks help you get to work on time. Off your soul, which was never yours to schedule and never was on the timetable you gave it.
This is yours right now, at the picnic table, with the dew still on the grass and Christmas nowhere in the frame. Isaiah 30 is written as an offer of strength rather than as an assignment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies what it names, so nothing this morning waits on you producing a better version of the plan first.
Say the name of Jesus out loud once, in the yard, at the volume of a man talking to somebody who is there, because He is.
You are receiving something today instead of manufacturing it, and that is the entire change of position. It is written in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that the transforming comes from the Lord who is the Spirit, and His Spirit is not on your card and never needed to be, which means the weight you have been carrying since November was never assigned to you.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the table before you go in. A man seated with Christ can open his mouth in his own backyard and mean every word of it, and that standing has nothing whatever to do with whether the plan on the card worked: the authority is His, handed down, and a man exercises it with his mouth open rather than with a pen in his hand. All three lines below are built out of Scripture, and what carries a sentence off a picnic table and into a life is the Holy Spirit, so a voice that comes out quiet at seven in the morning gets there as surely as a loud one. Where this goes from here stays where it has always been. He may answer in a season nobody laminated, and that is His to run.
- Card on the picnic table, you are laminated paper and you were never a schedule God agreed to. Isaiah 30:15 says the strength is in quietness and confidence, and that is what I am standing in this morning instead of another column of dates.
- Fear that nothing moves unless I run it, get out of this yard in the name of Jesus. Philippians 2:13 says God works in me both to will and to do of His good pleasure, and the Holy Spirit was doing exactly that in every quarter I crossed out and wrote again. You have had the run of this table long enough and your lease on it ends this morning.
- Lord, You are the One who has the rest of it and I am not asking for the calendar back. Your word promised that in returning and rest I am saved, and Your Spirit is the strength in the quiet, so I am taking today's portion from Your hand and going in to my family.
