At eleven forty on Sunday night she reinstalls the thing she deleted in January.
The house is quiet. The lesson plans for the week are done and stacked on the counter with the sub folder on top out of habit. She is not upset. That is the part nobody tells you about, that it does not always come at you out of a bad day; sometimes it comes on an ordinary Sunday when the dishes are done and there is nothing particularly wrong.
Inside the cabinet door, above the mugs, there is a strip of paper taped up with tally marks on it in pencil. Seventy-nine. She put the first one there on a Tuesday in December after a conversation with a woman at church she has not had the courage to update since.
It is a quarter past one when she puts the phone face down on the nightstand.
At six oh five the alarm goes. Seventh grade, life science, three sections, and a lab she set up on Friday with pond water in eight jars along the windowsill. She showers. She irons the blue shirt. She stands in her kitchen at ten to seven with the cabinet door shut, because opening it means the mugs, and the mugs mean the strip of paper.
Seven twenty, and she is at her classroom door with a paper cup of coffee on the ledge and the corridor filling up. This is a thing she is known for and she has done it every day for six years: she is out at the door before the first bell, and every single one of them gets their name said out loud.
Morning, Miss. Morning, Miss. A boy shows her a cut on his hand from a skateboard. Two girls come past mid-argument and she says both names and they laugh and stop. The tall one with the braces asks her if she is okay, because thirteen year olds miss nothing.
She says she is fine and she says it warmly and it is not entirely true.
Because standing in that doorway saying twenty-eight names, what is going round in her head is this: eight hours ago. Eight hours ago, and now here she is, in the blue shirt, doing the good thing she does, and the whole of it feels like a costume.
And you know that doorway, because you have stood in one. Yours may not have been a school. It may have been a Monday meeting, or the front of a room where you were expected to pray, or your own kitchen at seven with lunches to make and a face to put on. Something went back to zero on Sunday night. And Monday came anyway, the way it always does, and asked you to be the person you were on Saturday.
The counter is not the covenant
Let me say the honest thing first, because a page that starts with comfort has already lied to you.
Sunday night was real. It happened, it cost something, and it is not to be waved off with a word about grace. If somebody was hurt by it, that is owed a repair in daylight and not a private feeling. If money went, the money went. Nothing here is going to make Sunday smaller than it was, because a thing that gets made small does not get brought to God at all; it gets managed.
And now the other honest thing, which is the one you have not been told.
You are held this morning by a covenant that a Sunday night did not renegotiate. Scripture says that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, and the faithfulness in that sentence is His and not a rating of yours; the Spirit who moved into you did not pack a bag at eleven forty last night and leave you standing in a doorway alone.
Now look at the strip of paper in the cabinet, because it is doing two jobs and only one of them is honest. As a record it is fine. Seventy-nine days happened. Those were real days, with real evenings in them where something in you turned away from the thing and went to bed.
But somewhere along the line the strip stopped being a record and became a verdict. You have never once been the number in a cabinet, and the pencil marks were never what God was working with. The written word measures a person by what Christ has done for them and by the Spirit He put in them, not by a tally, and there is no passage anywhere in it where a streak is the unit God counts in.
Return is not the same word as restart
Here is the sentence I want in your hand before you go into first period.
Come, and let us return unto the LORD.Hosea 6:1
Return. Sit with that word a second, because everything is in it. You cannot return to a place you have never been. A stranger cannot return to a town. Only somebody who has already been there, who knows the road, whose feet know it in the dark, can do a thing called returning.
You are being called back rather than being sent to the start, and the difference between those two is the whole of this morning. That is written into the prophet's own vocabulary, and it is the Spirit who put the wanting-to-go-back in you at half past one when you turned the phone face down; a person with no appetite for God does not lie awake feeling the loss of Him.
A restart says the seventy-nine days were counterfeit. A return says the seventy-nine days were the road, and you are on it, and you are further along it than you were in December whatever the pencil says.
You have not been put back at the beginning, and nothing in Scripture puts anybody there. Proverbs says the righteous falls and rises again, which is written plainly and not softened anywhere, and the rising is worked by the same Spirit who was doing the standing on all seventy-nine of the other nights.
And notice who is speaking in Hosea. It is not God saying come back if you can manage it. It is the people saying to each other, come, let us return, out loud, in the plural, on the road. Returning is something you can start doing in a corridor at seven twenty in the morning with a coffee going cold on a ledge.
Monday morning, at the door, with the coffee
So what about the costume feeling. The blue shirt, the names, the boy with the cut hand, and eight hours ago sitting behind your eyes the whole time.
Hear this carefully. Standing at that door and saying twenty-eight names is not hypocrisy. It is obedience with a headache. The person who goes on doing the good ordinary thing on the morning after is not pretending; they are refusing to let one night take the rest of their life hostage, and heaven has a different name for that than the one you are using.
You are not a fraud in that doorway, and the good you did this morning was real good done by a real person. His word says His mercies are new every morning, which arrived at six oh five with the alarm, and it is His Spirit and not the state of your record who makes a Monday able to hold anything at all.
And if this is more than a strip of paper taped inside a cabinet, get a human being alongside you today, because that is one of the ways God moves and never a stand-in for Him moving. A doctor, because some of these things live in the body and a body needs a physician. A counselor who has sat through a hundred Sunday nights and was not shocked by any of them. The woman at church you have not updated since December, who is not going to take the seventy-nine days off you. And if last night ran somewhere past regret, if the thought has come that the corridor would be easier for everybody without you standing at the door, reach a person before first period and not tomorrow: 988, or whichever crisis line serves your district, and somebody close enough to sit down at your kitchen table. Nobody was built to carry this alone in a quiet house at a quarter past one.
So take the strip of paper out of the cabinet, and do not tear it up and do not start a new one yet.
You have seventy-nine real days behind you and one bad night, and the night did not reach back and unmake them. The word says the righteous man falls and rises, and the Spirit who has been carrying this since December was not dismissed at eleven forty on a Sunday; He is the reason you woke up at six oh five wanting to be somebody other than the woman on the couch.
There is a teacher in a blue shirt at a classroom door saying twenty-eight names out loud while she feels like a costume, and God is not somewhere else while that goes on. He is in the corridor. He likes the names.
You are being changed right now, as you read this, in a hallway with the first bell about to go. That is what the written word says of everybody who returns to Him, and His Spirit is the one doing it, this morning, with the pond water in eight jars and a lab to run. Come and let us return, says the prophet. Not tonight, once you have thought about it properly. Now, out loud, in the plural, with your coffee going cold.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud before the bell, in the car or in the doorway, whichever one leaves you alone for ninety seconds. Not silently, and not once the week has gone better. The standing is yours already: Christ took up residence in a woman who was somewhere else eight hours ago, and she is in Him this morning all the same. Hosea 6 is the floor under all three of these, not the strip of paper taped inside a cabinet, and carrying them down a corridor that is filling up with thirteen year olds is what the Holy Spirit does, so a shaky voice at seven twenty does the same job as a steady one. And the rest of the week goes up the way Jesus put it in the garden: not my will, but Thine.
- Counter in the cabinet, you are seventy-nine marks and a strip of tape, and you were never the covenant between God and me. Hosea 6 says come and let us return to the Lord, so I am returning this morning, and I am not standing where I stood in December.
- Fear that Sunday night was the real me and the other seventy-nine were an act, get out of this hallway. You have been talking since the alarm went and you are not coming into first period, in the name of Jesus, and the Holy Spirit who woke me wanting to come back is not working from your version of me. It is written that the righteous falls and rises again.
- Lord, You are the one I am returning to, and the light over the door was on before I got to the fork. Your word promised mercy that is new this morning and Your Spirit has not left this kitchen or this corridor. I am walking back onto the road I know, and I am going in to teach.
