Three Languages and No Change

This message is for the man at his desk at midnight with a concordance open, who can define sanctification in three languages and has run out of ways to make himself into somebody better

The clock on the stove says 12:04 and the coffee went cold around ten.

He is at the desk in the corner of the dining room, which is a desk because he set a lamp on it years ago and nobody has argued since. The concordance is open and held flat with a butter knife. Beside it, a Hebrew lexicon with the spine repaired in electrical tape, an interlinear Greek New Testament, and a legal pad ruled into three columns in pencil.

Column one, qadash. Column two, hagiasmos. Column three, sanctificatio. Under each one, in his small square handwriting, everything he knows about it. He knows a great deal. He could teach it Sunday morning for forty minutes without a note and people would drive home saying it was the best thing they had heard in a long while.

The furnace kicks on under the floor. Rain has been going at the storm door since supper. The dog gave up on him around eleven and is asleep against the radiator with one ear turned toward the desk in case anything changes.

Nothing changes.

Because here is the sentence that will not go onto the legal pad, and it has been standing behind his chair for a while now. He is the same man he was when he ruled the first column. Same temper on the phone with his brother. Same three days of silence when he is hurt and cannot say so. Same thing he does when the house is asleep and nobody is checking. He has the vocabulary of a change he cannot produce, in three languages, alphabetized, cross referenced, and no use to him at all at four minutes past midnight.

He picks up the pencil. He puts it down. He turns the lamp so the light falls on the wall instead of the page, because he is tired of the page.

And that desk is not only his. Yours might be a truck cab with a study Bible on the passenger seat, or a folding chair in the laundry room, or a kitchen counter at five in the morning with a mug going cold at your elbow. But the trade is the same trade. Learn the material. Teach the material. Answer the phone when somebody has a question, hang up, and sit in the quiet doing the honest arithmetic of how much of it ever arrived.

They did not study the snake

The camp is dying while Moses prays, and the remedy God hands him is one of the strangest things in the book.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.Numbers 21:8

Read the verb. Not touch it. Not carry it. Not comprehend it. Look at it. A man face down in the sand with his leg going black had exactly one motion left in him, and it was turning his head, and it was enough because of what was on the pole and not because of how well he turned.

You are being changed today by looking at Christ, and the changing was never waiting on your understanding of it. Jesus took that pole for His own picture in John 3:14, and 2 Corinthians 3:18 says plainly that the transforming comes from the Lord who is the Spirit, so it is the Spirit and the written word carrying this between them, and not the quality of your grip on either.

Let me be exact about that, because exactness is my trade. The verse does not say the transforming begins once a man understands it, and it does not say it arrives in proportion to how much of it he understands. It says beholding, and it says are being transformed, present and continuous, in people who mostly cannot feel a thing while it happens.

Notice too who in that camp got the same result. The Levite who could have recited the whole tabernacle system and the fourteen year old who could not have recited a line of it lived by the identical motion. Nobody's education bought anybody a better looking.

Numbers 21 is written without one condition attached to the looking, and the Spirit who moved a man to record it is the same Spirit at work in a dining room in the middle of the night. You have exactly the standing at that pole that the fourteen year old had.

The word for it and the weight of it

Let me tell you what I do, so you know who is talking at this hour. I check things. I read the line before the line somebody quoted. I find out whether a word carried the freight the sermon put on it. It is useful work and I am not apologizing for it.

Here is what it cannot do. It cannot put a thing inside a man. I could hand you the whole semantic range of hagiasmos across the Septuagint and the letters, hand it over accurately, footnote it, and it would leave you standing precisely where it found you. A concordance is a map of a country. It is a good map. Nobody has ever been fed by a map.

You have already been given the one thing this actually requires, and it is not another shelf. Romans 5:5 says the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us, and given is past tense in the written word: the pouring happened before you sat down tonight, and it did not consult your reading list first.

One plain thing before the teaching goes on, because midnight is where this can go wrong. If what is in a man at that desk is damaging his body, his sleep, or the people asleep upstairs, put a person into it. A doctor for whatever is physical. A counselor, or a pastor who takes the account with none of the footnotes trimmed off. Every bit of that sits inside what God is doing at this desk rather than outside it; it is the shape His help usually arrives in. And if this hour of the night has started turning over the notion that everyone upstairs would carry less with him gone, call or text 988 and stay on the line until there is somebody in the room.

There is a fourth column at that desk and you did not rule it, and you were not the only one reading the pencil in the margin at four minutes past midnight. You know the word in John 14:16 better than most men in your state: parakletos, the one called alongside, and a noun built that way records an errand somebody was sent on and not an opinion somebody holds. The Spirit has been on that errand every hour the lamp has been lit, and He never once waited for the columns to balance.

There is no wrong way to turn your head

This is the point where a man like me does the damage, so I will say it against myself first. The moment beholding becomes a discipline with a correct form, the list has swallowed the cure. There is no posture to master here. There is no minimum. There is no state anybody has to reach before it counts.

Second Corinthians 3:16 says that when a man turns to the Lord the veil is taken away, and the same passage names the Spirit of the Lord as the freedom standing in the room. So take it where it stands. You are unveiled right now, at four minutes past midnight, with the pencil down and nothing finished.

Nobody has ever tanned by concentrating. A man sits where the light is falling, the light does the rest, and somebody says at supper that the sun has caught him. He did not do the catching. He did the sitting. That is the mercy built into the mechanism: the exhausted can still sit, and a man who has broken every promise he ever made himself can still turn his head.

You have His attention tonight, and you did not buy it with the lexicon. John 6:37 is written flat and without conditions, and the Spirit who moved a man to write it is the same Spirit who put the hunger in you that walked you to that chair in the first place. Sit with that one a minute before you read on.

The breakthrough

So close the concordance. Not forever, and not as a rule, and not because study is a sin. Close it the way a man sets down a tool he has held so long his hand has taken its shape, because both hands are needed for what is being held out to him.

This is yours right now, at midnight, with the third column barely started and the handwriting getting worse toward the bottom of the page. Numbers 21 promised life to everyone who looked and never once asked a bitten man to explain the bronze, and the same Spirit who moved over that camp is in the room where you are sitting, so none of this waits on a better version of you arriving first.

Turn the lamp back toward the window if it helps. Say the name of Jesus out loud, once, at the volume of a man speaking to somebody who is actually in the room, because He is.

You are looking at Him now, and the looking is the entire portion assigned to you. It is written in 2 Corinthians 3:18 that we all, beholding, are being transformed from one degree of glory to another, and His Spirit is named in that same sentence as the one doing the transforming, which means the heavy end of this was assigned before you were born and it was not assigned to you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the desk with the lamp turned, out loud, at midnight, where only the dog is listening. A man in Christ has a standing that no amount of Hebrew adds to and no dry decade takes away, and it is that standing, not the shelf behind him, that gives a spoken sentence any force. Numbers 21 is the picture of it: the people who lived did not parse the serpent, they looked at it. Every line below has a written word under it, and putting a written sentence inside a man is the Holy Spirit's part and never the reader's, and midnight flatness in a man's voice takes nothing off it. What comes of it, and when, is His to decide, and a man who can define the whole thing in three languages still has to leave it there.

  1. Three columns on the legal pad, you are pencil and paper and you were never the measure of a changed man. Numbers 21 says the bitten lived by looking and not by knowing, and looking is what I am doing tonight instead of ruling one more line.
  2. Fear that I am a shelf and not a son, get out of this study in the name of Jesus. Scripture says the love of God has been poured into my heart through the Holy Spirit who was given to me, and a man carrying that is no shelf. You have had the run of these midnights long enough and the tenancy ends tonight.
  3. Lord, You are the One lifted up, and my head is turned toward You with the concordance down on the floor and both hands empty. John 3 puts the whole of it in a look and not in a lexicon, and Your Spirit is doing tonight what three ruled columns were never going to do. The rest of it stays with You.
