The Grades She Keeps on Herself

This message is for the teacher at her desk after the last bell entering grades, who keeps a private grade book on her own character and has run out of ways to make herself into somebody better

The last bus pulls out at 3:32 and the building goes quiet in a way it never is at any other hour of the day.

She is at her desk in room 14 with the grade book open on the laptop, fifth grade, the last week of October, entering a stack of multiplication quizzes. It has rained since lunch. The windows have that flat gray light that makes the fluorescent tubes look yellow, and a dead ladybug lies on the sill she has been meaning to clear since Monday. A construction paper pumpkin hangs by one corner, turning whenever the radiator knocks on.

This part is easy. Twenty-two names, a column of numbers, a comment box she fills from the same four sentences she has rotated since September. She is good at this, and has been for nineteen years.

Then she finishes the last name, and she does the other thing.

In the second drawer down, under the substitute folder and a bag of cough drops gone soft in their wrappers, is a spiral notebook nobody in the building has ever seen. It is not a journal. She would be embarrassed to call it a journal. It is a grade book, and the only student in it is her.

The columns are in her own shorthand. Patience. Tone. Whether she was kind to the classroom aide, who is twenty-three and slow with the copier and does not deserve the face she makes. Whether she prayed in the morning or told herself she would pray in the car and turned the radio on instead. Whether she got through one whole day without the flat voice, the one her own mother used, the one she promised herself at nineteen she would never use on a child.

Tonight she uncaps the pen, writes the date, and adds one line.

Snapped at the boy with the broken zipper. 1:15.

Above it, from Tuesday, another line about the same boy. Above that, September, August, and back through nine notebooks in a shoe box at home, the first started in a January when she decided that what was wrong with her was that she had not been keeping track.

The custodian's cart squeaks past the door. He says night. She says night. She slides the notebook under the folder, pushes the drawer shut with her knee, and sits with her hand still on the pull, listening to the rain and doing the arithmetic she has done ten thousand times: nineteen years, and the column has not moved.

And you know that notebook, because there is one with your name on it. Yours may not be paper. It may be a tally in the back of your head that starts the second the house goes quiet, and it has your temper in it, and the thing you do at midnight, and the days since you last broke the promise you made yourself in the spring. That book has been open a long time, and nobody has ever read it but its author.

The notebook in the second drawer

Nobody hands you that notebook. It is not assigned, it never gets collected, and no one at church has ever asked to see it. A person starts it themselves, usually young, usually a week after somebody's disappointment landed on them, and keeps it because it feels like the responsible thing a serious adult does with their own soul.

And the entries are accurate. That is what makes the thing so hard to put down. She did snap at the boy with the zipper. The flat voice is real, the third pass through the same app at midnight is real, the nine days without prayer are nine actual days, and nothing in the book is a lie. It is a true record, kept by an expert, and the expert is worn out.

You are being changed today, and the changing is not an entry anybody makes in a notebook. I am not laying encouragement over your week like a sticker on a bad quiz. Psalm 123 puts a servant's eyes on her master's hand and never once on her own hands, and the same Spirit who moved a psalmist to write that line is at work in your house tonight, at whatever hour you are reading this. The looking is where the change comes from. The ledger has never made one single thing move.

Nineteen years of honest effort is a real nineteen years, and I will not make light of it. There is no observer at the back of your room writing this up. Not God, and not me.

Philippians 1:6 says the good work begun in you belongs to the One who began it, and He is the one bringing it along; His Spirit does not open your notebook before He starts the day's work. You have a Finisher, and He never appointed you to the post.

The eyes of a servant are on the hand

There is one verse underneath everything on this page, and it is not a verse about trying harder. It is a picture of a room.

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.Psalm 123:2

Look where her eyes are. Not on her own two hands. Not on the work she did yesterday, not on a tally of how well she has served the house. On the hand. You are a servant whose eyes were made to rest on a hand that is not your own, and that is the whole posture the written word asks of you. The Spirit lifts that sentence out of an old psalm and makes it a living thing in a room with a dead ladybug on the sill, which is very much the kind of room He prefers.

The hand is how a master speaks across a loud house, and the servant watching it is not performing anything. She is not marked on the quality of her watching. She is facing the right way, and everything she needs next arrives from a direction that is not herself.

Notice too what the psalm does not say. It does not say the eyes wait until the servant has proved something, or until she has a better week behind her. It says the eyes wait until He has mercy. Mercy is what arrives, and mercy has been arriving in your house on all the days you wrote nothing down.

There is no wrong way to look at Him

Let me say plainly what this looking is not, because a woman with a notebook will turn anything into one more column. It is not a discipline that can be performed incorrectly. No minimum number of minutes, no posture to get right, no quiet enough house, no feeling to reach before it counts. The moment beholding becomes a technique with a standard attached, the standard has swallowed the cure, and the notebook comes back out with a fresh column ruled at the top.

Scripture says that when a person turns to the Lord the veil is taken away, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. You have everything the looking requires already, and it was never your concentration. A tired woman can look. A woman who has broken every promise she made herself since January can look. It is the one thing the weakest person in the building is able to do, which is very likely why God built the whole mechanism on it.

If what goes in that notebook has started landing on somebody, on a child, on the person across the kitchen table, on her own body, then the next part is the plainest thing on this page. Bringing a person in on it is not a substitute for what God is doing here. He has always worked through means, and a trained human being is one of them. A doctor, because sleep and thyroid and ordinary pain drop a woman's reading of her own character by a whole letter and never announce themselves. A counselor, weekly, who can watch one pattern across months and see what nobody living inside it can see. A pastor, or the one friend who gets the whole story and not the staff room version. And if the evenings have gone somewhere past regret, if it has started to seem that room 14 would do better with a different woman in it, call or text 988 tonight and ask somebody to drive over.

Room 14 was never as empty at 3:32 as it felt, and you have had somebody at the second desk the whole nineteen years. Hebrews 13:5 has God saying He will never leave you nor forsake you, and never has no exceptions written under it, not even the weeks your own shorthand came back bad. The Spirit is what turns a line like that into somebody who parks in the lot and walks in.

The breakthrough

So close the notebook. Not because keeping track is wicked, and not as the technique that replaces the last technique. Close it because both hands are needed for something that is being held out to you right where you sit.

You have a Master whose hand is already moving, and the mercy in it is not being weighed against your columns. The psalm says the eyes wait on the Lord until He has mercy, and 2 Corinthians 3:18 says everyone who beholds is being changed from one degree of glory to another by the Lord who is the Spirit. Neither sentence leaves any room at all for your record.

There is a woman in a classroom with rain on the windows and nine notebooks in a shoe box at home, and nothing in her arithmetic was wrong except the direction she was facing.

You are being changed right now, as you read this, and the notebook is not where it is being written down. That is what the word says is true of everyone who looks, and His Spirit is the one carrying it along through every hour when it does not feel like anything at all. Turn your face. The hand was moving before you ever sat down.

Declare this over yourself

Say these at the desk in room 14, or at the kitchen table, wherever the book is kept. Out loud, because a thought stays a thought. The standing that makes a woman's words carry was given to you in Christ and never once earned in a column: Romans 8 calls you a child and an heir, and that is not a mark anybody revises at the end of a term. Each of the three has a written line underneath it, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the woman's nerve, who makes a spoken sentence live in an empty classroom, which means the steadiness of the voice has nothing to do with anything. Say your part, and be glad of whatever He does with it.

  1. Notebook in the second drawer, you are paper and a ballpoint pen, and you were never the record that decides anything about me. Psalm 123 says my eyes wait on the hand of the Lord until He has mercy, and my eyes are on that hand tonight instead of on your columns.
  2. Fear that nineteen years of trying is the verdict on me, get out of this room. You have had the run of my evenings for a long time and I am ending that tenancy tonight, in the name of Jesus. Psalm 138 says the Lord perfects what concerns me, and His Spirit has been at work in the places a spiral notebook was never going to reach.
  3. Lord, my eyes are on Your hand tonight, the way Psalm 123 sets a servant's eyes on the hand of the one who provides, and I am not looking anywhere else this evening. Thank You that Your Spirit has been at work through nineteen Octobers in a woman who could not have graded a minute of it, and the notebook goes back in the drawer face down.
