The kitchen is dark except for the small light over the stove, and the window over the sink is black enough to be a mirror.
It is half past five in the morning, the second week of February. The furnace has already come on twice. There is a fern of frost on the inside corner of the glass where the caulk gave out two winters ago, and she has been meaning to call somebody about that since October.
She has a yellow legal pad and a pen from the credit union. At the top she writes the date, the way she has written the date on a Tuesday for most of her adult life. Underneath, she writes: patience with Dana. Then: stop at eleven, actually stop. Then: read something that is not the phone. Then, after a minute, in smaller letters, because she is tired of writing it down: be softer with people.
The coffee is doing the thing coffee does in a quiet house, ticking as it cools. Out past the glass there is nothing to see yet. The shape of the fence. A porch light two houses over that somebody leaves on all night.
She keeps the old ones. That is the part she would not tell anybody. They are pressed flat in the back of a church cookbook above the toaster, a soft stack going back years, and last week she pulled one out looking for a recipe and found a list from four Februaries ago. Different pen. Same four lines.
She stood a while with the cookbook open on her arm. Then she put the old list back where it was and made the coffee.
She is not a lazy woman and she is not a pretender. She has read the books and gone to the studies and gotten up early for eleven years to be honest with herself before the house woke up. And every single line on that pad is correct.
That is what gets her. Not that the list is wrong. That it is right, and it has been right, and being right about it has never once been enough.
And I think you know this pad, even if yours lives in a phone or in the back of your head where nobody else can find it. The count has been kept and the honesty has been real. And this morning it is dark out, the count is accurate, and there is nothing left to try.
The list is not wrong, and that is the trouble
I want to say the kind thing first, and it happens to also be the true thing. The list is accurate. Every item. Nobody on this earth knows that kitchen the way the woman standing in it at half past five knows it.
Eleven years of legal pads, and not one of them dishonest. She was doing the most humble thing a person can do before dawn, which is to look straight at what is wrong with her, write it down in her own hand without flinching, and go to work.
And it did not change her. Not because she is weak, and not because she skipped something. Because a list is a description, and a description, however true, has never once been a power.
Colossians 1 says that in Christ all things hold together, and His Spirit is the one keeping that written line a floor under a woman rather than a sentence she once underlined.
You are held this morning by something that is not your accuracy about yourself. The holding was never coming from the pad, and it was never coming from the eleven years either.
I can name the month a thing started in me and the room it started in, and hold the whole of it in one hand, and I am still exactly the woman holding it. Knowing has never once been the same as being changed.
Now hear where David puts his eyes, because it is nowhere near a pad.
I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.Psalm 16:8
Read the order of it. He sets something in front of himself, and the steadiness arrives afterward, as a consequence, never as a project he ran. There is no inventory in it anywhere. The Spirit carried that line into Scripture for people who had run out of other ideas at odd hours.
You have a place in front of the face of Christ this morning, and not one line on that pad had to be crossed off to get it. Hebrews 10 says a new and living way was opened for us and that we come with boldness, and the Spirit is what brings a person through it. The standing is not built out of the four things written at the top of the page.
Setting Him before you is not the fifth item on the pad
Here is where this usually goes wrong, so let me say it plainly. Looking at Jesus is not a discipline anybody can perform incorrectly. There is no posture to get right, no minimum number of minutes, no feeling to reach before it counts. The moment beholding becomes item five, the list has swallowed the cure, and by Thursday there is a fresh pad and the same tired woman holding the pen.
Think about the frost on that window. It is a real fern of ice, and nothing she does at five thirty touches it. Then the sun comes around the corner of the house at about nine, and by ten the glass is clear and wet and there is no ice anywhere on it. The glass did not concentrate. It was simply turned toward the place the light was coming from when the light arrived.
That is the mechanism, and it sits in Paul's plainest sentence about change.
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.2 Corinthians 3:18
You are being changed today by looking, and not one degree of it is manufactured by you. The written line does not say will be, it says are changed, present and continuous, and the same sentence hands the whole business to the Spirit of the Lord rather than to the one doing the looking.
And I love that it is looking, of all things. Looking is what a tired person can still do, at five thirty in the morning, with no plan and no clean week behind her. I think He chose it for exactly the people who write lists.
You have already been given the only thing this runs on, and it is not concentration. Philippians 2 says it is God who works in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure, and the working belongs to His Spirit rather than to your attention span, which is why a distracted woman at a window is not disqualified from any of it.
Nobody is standing at the counter with a clipboard
Let me get something out of the room, because I can feel it standing there.
There is no schedule on this page. Nothing here will tell you where you ought to have gotten to by now, and I am not holding up anybody else's overnight turnaround as the shape yours is supposed to take. There is no clock on this counter and none in His hand either, and He has never once stood you next to another believer to see how it went.
You were never being graded in that kitchen, not once in eleven years. Romans 8 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, and the same chapter says the Spirit of life has set us free, which means the accounting running quietly at dawn was never His accounting of you.
And if what is on that pad is doing real damage, to you or to somebody asleep down the hall, then take this next part exactly as it stands. Asking for help is not the sound of faith running out, and it is no way around God either; it is one of the ordinary means He gets things done by, the same as bread and medicine and the sun coming up over a fence. Make an appointment with a doctor, because February at half past five is not always a spiritual condition. Find a counselor and keep the appointment. Give a pastor the version that never gets written down in the credit union pen. And if the mornings have gone past regret into something that frightens you when you finally say it plainly, call or text 988 before the light comes, and get somebody to come and sit at this counter.
So set Him before you. Not as item five, and not tonight when the house is quiet and it has been earned. Now, in the dark, with the list still true and the coffee going cold.
You have permission to look at Jesus this morning exactly as you are, unimproved, honest, holding a pen. The written word says we come boldly to the throne of grace and find help in time of need, and the Spirit turns that written promise into a doorway rather than a nice sentence, so nothing about it waits on a better version of the woman arriving first.
Turn the pad over. Not forever, and not because effort is wicked. Turn it over because both hands are full of it, and something is being held out that needs a hand.
This is yours right now, in a black window, an hour before the light. Psalm 16 promised that the one who sets the Lord before him is not moved, and His Spirit is making that true in a body that still feels shaky, so the steadiness does not have to be felt in order to be given. The frost on that glass never once had to try.
Declare this over yourself
Say these at the window, in a voice only the kitchen hears. The right to say them is delegated, handed over the day you were joined to Christ, and it does not come off a pad or out of a good week. Psalm 16 puts the Lord at a woman's right hand before she has crossed off a single line. Not one of these three lines stands on its own; every one has a written word holding it up. Taking a sentence out of a dark kitchen and making it live is the Holy Spirit's work, which is why it does not matter how steady anybody sounds at half past five. God may answer in a way nobody standing at this glass would have drawn up, and He is good in that too.
- Yellow pad on the counter, you are a true list and you were never the thing that makes me new. Psalm 16 says I have set the Lord always before me, and that is where my eyes are going while the coffee goes cold.
- Fear that I am God's unfinished business, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says the One who began a good work in me is the One carrying it on, and His Spirit has been at it in the dark for years while I wrote in the margins, and I put you out in the name of Jesus.
- Lord, I am setting You before me this morning the way Psalm 16 says a woman is kept, and You were already standing at my right hand before I ever turned around. Thank You that Your Spirit is doing the changing with the pad face down and not one line crossed off, and those four lines belong to You now instead of to me.
