He Begins HereEzekiel 36:26

Where He Begins Is Exactly Where You Are

This message is for the tea time kitchen where a pan lid goes on the floor and your eight year old's shoulders come up half an inch before she has even turned round

The lid comes off the pan and goes onto the tiles, and the noise it makes is enormous, the way a dropped lid always is, spinning itself flat over about four seconds while everybody waits for it to finish.

Three children at the table. The little one laughs. The middle one says something about the dog. And the eldest, who is eight, does not turn round, and her shoulders come up half an inch.

That is all. Half an inch, and back down again, and she carries on with her fish sticks, and nobody else in the room saw it.

Her mother saw it. Her mother has been standing at the stove for four seconds with a wooden spoon in her hand and she has just watched her own daughter brace for a noise, and she knows exactly which noise her daughter's body was bracing for, and it was not the lid.

She does not shout. Not usually. It is the other thing, the fast sharp thing that arrives before she has decided anything, out of her mouth and across the room and gone again in three seconds, and then she is fine, and she thinks about it at eleven o'clock at night.

You know that four seconds. Maybe yours is not a kitchen and maybe there is no child in it, but you have had the moment where you saw the effect of yourself on somebody, in their body, before they had time to hide it. And what you want is not encouragement about growth. What you want is for this to be different by the weekend, and you have already tried the things you know how to try.

Start with the true thing about the load

Two things before anything else, and neither of them is a program.

The first: what happened at the stove is worth taking seriously, and taking it seriously was right. That is not condemnation, that is your conscience working, and a conscience that has gone quiet about a thing like this is far more worrying than one that has not. The urgency in you is a good instrument. Do not let anybody talk you out of it, and do not let anybody, including me, turn it into shame, because shame is very good at looking like repentance and it produces nothing but hiding.

The second, and this one gets said plainly on this site rather than tucked away at the bottom: if anybody under this roof is being hurt, or is frightened of somebody, then help is not the alternative to what God is doing here. It is one of His instruments. Tell your doctor. Ask for a referral to a counselor. Call the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453, and if the fear is of somebody in your home, the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. And if the eleven o'clock thoughts have moved past regret and started making a case that these three children would be better off with somebody else at that stove, reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline today by calling or texting 988, or any crisis line near you, rather than leaving it until the morning. Not one of those numbers is a detour. Every phone on that list has God's fingerprints on it.

You are held by God tonight, in the exact kitchen where you saw it, and nothing you watched at the stove has moved you one inch outside His love. Scripture is plain that there is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in you is not the voice doing the eleven o'clock prosecution. He is the one who showed you the half inch, gently, because He is going to do something about it.

He starts on the actual heart, not the surface

Now here is the thing that has run out, and here is what God says about it.

The work has all gone into the behavior. That is the only place a person can work, and it is not nothing, and the strategies were sensible ones. Count to five. Leave the room. Sleep more. Some of them even hold, for two weeks. But the reason they keep failing has nothing whatever to do with laziness or insincerity. It is that the fast sharp thing is not manufactured at the surface, and sanding a floorboard from underneath will never smooth the top of it.

I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 36:26

Read what God says He does there, and read who is doing it. He does not send a method. He does not improve the existing arrangement. He goes to the organ itself, takes out what has gone hard, and puts in something that can feel again, and the whole sentence is in the first person and the first person is His. Paul says the same thing in a different key: anybody in Christ is a new creation, and the new is not a project the person completes.

You have been given a new heart already, and the thing coming out of you at the stove is not a report on what you are made of now. That is the written word's claim about every person in Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one currently at work in the exact place where three seconds happen, which is a place your willpower has never once been able to reach.

Notice the second half of the verse too, because it is the answer to a question you may have stopped asking. A heart of flesh is not a harder heart that manages itself better. It is a softer one. God's remedy for a sharpness that frightens an eight year old is not more control. It is tenderness, actual tenderness, given rather than achieved, and that is the direction the change is running in whether or not it looks like it this week.

Today, and no date on the rest of it

Here is where I have to be honest with you, and the honesty is the kindest thing in this article.

I cannot tell you that Saturday will be different. Nobody can and nobody should. There is no verse anywhere that puts a date on it, and any writing that promises you a fast result is selling you a thing God did not sell. What I can tell you, because it is written down, is that He begins where you actually are and He does not wait for you to be a better candidate first. He is not standing off until the pattern improves enough to make Him welcome. There is no threshold on the door.

You have His attention on this tonight, at the exact point you are actually at rather than the point you would like to be at. Scripture never once shows God waiting for someone to tidy up before He starts, and the Holy Spirit does not require a run of good days as evidence of intent.

So there is something to do with your mouth, and it is not a plan.

Jesus taught that the smallest living faith a person has, spoken out loud at the thing in the way, is enough for God to work with. Spoken. Not resolved on, not managed, not written down in a notebook. And what is in the way is a thing you have been very careful to keep unspoken, because saying it out loud in your own voice makes it real.

You have real authority to bring it to God plainly and ask Him to begin, and that authority is yours because you belong to Christ rather than because you have earned a hearing. The word gives the standing, the Holy Spirit carries the asking, and He answers as He chooses, in the time and the way that are His.

The breakthrough

So here, in the kitchen, with the lid still on the floor if it comes to that.

Name it out loud. The actual thing, in the actual words, not the softened managerial version of it. Not I can be a bit short sometimes. The real sentence. Say it once, to God, at speaking volume, and do not add a promise on the end of it, because the promise is the bit that has always been yours and it has never been the bit that worked.

You have the standing to say it in your own voice tonight, and the saying does not have to come out steady to be heard. It is written that we come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need, and the Holy Spirit carries the groan when the words come out badly, so a shaking sentence at a stove reaches Him exactly as a composed one does.

Then ask Him to start on it today. Not to help you with it. To start on it. There is a difference, and the difference is who is holding the tools.

You are being answered from the inside, where the three seconds are made, and that is ground your counting to five was never able to stand on. God said He would put His Spirit within His people and cause them to walk in His ways, and the written promise is that He does the causing, so the beginning is His and the naming is all that was ever yours.

You may still get a hard Saturday. That will not mean He did not begin.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the kitchen. The standing to speak them is yours in Christ, so they rest on His finished work and on what God has written, never on how tonight went, and the Holy Spirit carries them rather than the force of your voice, which is why a sentence said at a stove with a shake all through it lands the same as a steady one. There is no date in any of them, because He answers as He chooses and the timing of this is not something you are owed.

  1. Pan lid on the kitchen floor, you are not what my children will remember of me. Scripture says God takes out the heart of stone and gives a heart of flesh, and He is working at a depth my counting to five never reached.
  2. Sentence that says this is simply who I am, you do not describe me and you do not get the future of this house, and I break your hold in the name of Jesus. The word of God says anyone in Christ is a new creation, and a new creation is not a person managing an old one.
  3. Lord, You begin where I actually am and You began before I asked. You promised the new heart Yourself and You put it in writing long before this kitchen existed, and Your Spirit is at work tonight in the three seconds I have never been able to reach. I thank You, and I am naming it out loud to You instead of promising You anything.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
