The green beans are on the stove and the good platter is out, which is how she knows this is not an ordinary Thursday.
Her granddaughter is sixteen and she has been talking since the screen door banged. Something about a class she wants next year. A teacher who told her she has a good eye. A portfolio she would have to put together over the summer, and a program in the city she could apply to, and she is talking fast, the way a person talks when they have been saving something up for a particular kitchen.
And then it comes out. Nine words, maybe eleven. Something about how that is not a living, and what happened to the nursing idea, and does she have any notion what a program like that costs.
She hears it leave.
That is the part she will still be turning over at two in the morning. Not that she thought it. She heard it leave, and she watched it land, and there was a whole second in between where she could have shut her mouth and did not.
The girl does not argue. That is the worst of it. The girl looks at her plate and cuts a piece of chicken she does not eat, and says the beans are good, and after that she answers in three words at a time. Her phone stays face down beside her fork and she never once picks it up, and somehow that is worse than if she had.
The clock over the stove goes on with its business. The refrigerator hums and shuts off. Out on the step the dog changes sides.
And the grandmother sits there and hears whose voice it was. Her own mother's, out of a kitchen forty years gone, over a different plate, aimed at a girl who was seventeen and had a whole notebook of drawings under her bed. She promised herself in a car once that she would never say that to a child. She has said it now. She said it with green beans on the stove and the good platter out.
You know which sentence I mean, because there is one in your house too. It comes out at the table, or in the car, or in a doorway with the keys already in your hand, and it is always the true thing said in the wrong voice, or the false thing said in a voice that carries. This is not a page for being told it will all come right in a while. Something has to change now, before the next meal, because there is a person on the other side of it.
He does not wait for the dishes to be done
I am not going to slow you down, because slowing down is not what you came for. You did not come for a deeper understanding of yourself. You came because a child went quiet at your table and you would like the next meal to be different.
Good. That is not impatience. That is the right instinct, and God is not offended by it.
Because look where He starts in Ezekiel. Not with the behavior. Not with a chart on the refrigerator door and a promise about tone of voice.
And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh.Ezekiel 11:19
That is written to a people who had run out of their own ideas, and the Spirit He names in the middle of it is the same Spirit at work in a kitchen with the platter still in the sink. You are standing in front of a God who begins, and beginning is the thing He is doing right now, before one dish is washed.
Read what He takes and what He gives. He takes out a stone. He gives flesh. He does not sand the stone down, He does not teach the stone to behave in company, and He does not hand anybody a program for stone management.
You have a God who works on hearts and not on conduct, and He was at work on yours before the platter came down off the shelf. Ezekiel 11:19 says the taking out and the giving are both His, and it is His Spirit, not the strength of your resolve, that does it, which is why this can start on the worst evening of the year.
The sentence came from somewhere older than tonight
Now, about whose voice it was.
You heard your mother in it. Maybe your father. There is a stony place in you that has a history, and history is real, and I am not going to pretend the kitchen you grew up in did not happen.
But hear me on what it is not. This is not a demon riding your family, and it is not a curse laid on your house, and it is not a line that has to run through you because it ran through her. Scripture calls it a stone. A stone is a thing God removes, and He says so in the first person, and His Spirit stands behind the removing. You were handed a promise that names the stone and refuses to name you by it.
That distinction matters at two in the morning. A curse is a thing you would have to break. A stone is a thing He takes out. One of those puts you back on the ladder. The other one is the reason you can go to sleep tonight.
And because this one is landing on somebody, let me say the next part flat and not in passing. If what comes out of you at that table is doing damage, that is not yours to handle privately. A person brought in on it is never a step away from God; He has been sending somebody into the kitchen alongside a woman since long before this evening, and that is one of the ways the work actually gets done. A doctor, if sleep or a body or a prescription is anywhere in it, because those things have volume on them and pretending otherwise costs a family years. A counselor who gets all of it, not the trimmed account that keeps a grandmother sounding reasonable. Your pastor. And if two in the morning has stopped being about the sentence and turned into wondering whether the people who love you would be lighter without you here at all, do not sit alone with that until daylight. 988 picks up a text as quickly as a call, a crisis line stays on the line as long as it takes, and there is no shame anywhere in asking somebody to come and sit down at that table tonight.
You have company in this kitchen that does not leave when the plates are cleared. The word says the Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit, and Jesus named the Spirit He sent the Comforter, which tells you what He is for.
Go on down the hall
Here is what I would do before anything else, and it is not a plan and it does not have steps in it. Go and find her.
Not with an explanation. An explanation is a sentence about you, and she has had enough sentences about you tonight. Go with the short true thing. That was mine. It was not yours. I am sorry, and I would like to hear the rest about the program.
That will not fix your heart. It was never going to. God does the heart, and He does not sub-contract that to an apology in a hallway. But obedience does not stand around waiting for the cure to finish. You have a mouth God is not done with, and He is not holding it hostage until you prove you can be trusted with it. His word says that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive, and it is the Spirit and not your sincerity who makes that real in a hallway at nine at night.
And if she is grown and gone and the kitchen is three states away, the phone is right there on the counter. If she will not pick up, say it to God out loud instead and let Him hold it, because He is nearer to that girl than you are.
You are forgiven at the exact table where it happened, and that is settled ground rather than a feeling you have to work up. That is what is written, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves it from something you believe into something you are standing on.
So bring it now. Not the improved version of it, and not the account of it that comes out funny at a table of friends. Bring the sentence, the voice it came in, and the stone underneath it, and bring them in the state they are in.
You are standing in the exact place God said He begins, and He said it about a heart and never about a performance. Ezekiel 11:19 puts the whole operation in His hands, and the Spirit He promised in the same breath is already in the room, so there is nothing here waiting on a better woman to walk in first.
He does not begin with the dishes done. He does not begin once the record is clean, or once you have gone a stretch without saying it, or once you can describe the pattern properly. He begins here, which is the only place He has ever begun with anybody.
You have a heart of flesh promised to you by name, and the promise is not being held back until you prove you can hold your tongue. It is written that He takes the stone out and gives the flesh, and the same Spirit who carried that word to a wrecked people carries it to a kitchen, and He does not need you to feel it before it is true.
Declare this over yourself
Speak these where the plates still are, before the light changes and it gets easy to leave it for the morning. You did not earn a chair in this business. Christ sat you down in one, seated with Him, and a woman who speaks from that chair speaks on weight that was lent to her and never on her own. Every line below rests on something God had written down long before this evening happened, and the words themselves are carried by the Holy Spirit rather than by the steadiness of the woman saying them, so a voice that goes thin halfway through gets the whole sentence there. What comes of it afterward He will do in His own way, on a clock He has never once let me set for Him.
- Silence that came down over my kitchen table, you are not the last word in this house, and you do not get to decide what the next meal sounds like. It is written that God takes the stony heart out and gives a heart of flesh, and that is the work going on here while the platter is still in the sink.
- Verdict that says this is all I will ever be, get out of my kitchen. In the name of Jesus, that chair at my table is not yours any longer, because Romans 8:1 puts no condemnation whatever over a woman who belongs to Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit has it.
- Lord, You are the God who begins, and You are beginning here, in this kitchen, this evening. You promised a heart of flesh in the place of the stone, and Your Spirit is the one doing the taking out and the giving, so I am not going hunting for a better method. I am going down the hall to find her.
