Eleven forty at night, and the rain has stopped, but the water is still coming off the roof in that irregular way that makes you think it has not.
He is in his own driveway with the engine off. The trash cans are already out at the curb because it is Tuesday and he did that before he left. The porch light is on. There is a light in the upstairs window and then there is not, which means his wife has finished her book and gone to sleep, which means he has as long as he wants.
This is where he prays. Not in the house, where somebody could hear a word through a wall. Not at church, where he is the man who opens in prayer on Tuesdays and does it well. Here, in a parked car with the keys in his lap, is where he actually talks to God, and he has done it for years, and he is good at it.
He starts the way he always starts. He thanks God for the day and he means it. He prays for his wife by name. He prays for the kid who has stopped answering. And then he does the hard part, and he does not flinch at the hard part, because he has never been a coward about the hard part.
The temper, Lord. I was short with her again on Thursday and I saw her face.
The money, Lord. The way I talk about it. The way I look at what other men have.
The thing with the phone at night, Lord. The scrolling. The hours.
The pride. The way I like being the one who prays.
And he goes down the list, and it is a real list, honestly kept, and God is not being handled here. This is a man with the windows up telling the truth about himself out loud in the dark.
Then he gets to the next one.
And his mouth stops.
It has stopped in this exact place for something like nineteen years. Not out of shame exactly, though there is shame in it. It is more like the sentence has no road into the air. He has never said it. Not to his wife, not to a pastor, not on a retreat with the lights down and the music going, not once in a car at eleven forty at night with nobody in the world listening except God.
He sits with his hands on the keys. The water comes off the roof.
Then he says amen, and he goes inside, and he brushes his teeth, and it is Tuesday, and this has been the shape of his prayer life for two decades.
There is one in you too, or you would have closed this already. Not necessarily the same one. But there is a place where the list stops, and you know precisely where it stops, and nobody else on this earth does.
Subdue is His verb, not yours
Micah is at the end of his book and he does something that reads like a man losing an argument with his own hope. He asks who is a God like this. And then he says what this God does.
He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.Micah 7:19
Sit on that middle clause for a second, because it is the one everybody reads past. He will subdue our iniquities. He does the subduing. Not the man in the car. The verb belongs to God, and it is the same word you would use for holding something down until it stops fighting.
You are not the one who has to get a knee on this thing, and you never were. Micah 7:19 hands the subduing to God in plain words, and the Spirit who moved a prophet to write that line is the one who applies it in a driveway, which is why nineteen years of trying to pin it yourself has felt exactly like what it is.
And notice what is not in that verse. There is no condition, no procedure, no correct order of words. Micah does not say He subdues the iniquities you have successfully articulated.
The written word puts God's delight in mercy at the front of the sentence, and it is His Spirit and not your vocabulary that carries this. You have a God who already knows the name of it and has not gone anywhere.
The depths of the sea is not a filing cabinet
Then Micah does something with the sins themselves, and it is not gentle and it is not tidy. He throws them into deep water.
Not buried, where a thing can be dug up. Not filed, where a thing can be pulled and reviewed. Into the sea, and specifically the depths of it, which in the ancient world was the one place nobody was getting anything back from. It is the most final image available to a man who had never seen a submarine.
You have been handling a thing that God has already thrown overboard. Scripture puts it in the depths of the sea and puts our sins as far from us as the east is from the west, and the Spirit does not keep a copy of what the Father has drowned.
Now let me refuse something, because this is exactly where an article like this tries to sell you a key. I do not have one. If saying it out loud were the key, then the man who cannot get the sentence out would be locked out, and that is a religion for articulate people. This site is not going to hand you a technique with the word breakthrough written on it and leave you responsible for turning it. The whole weight of Micah 7 is that God is the one who subdues and God is the one who throws.
And I am not going to tell you what your one thing is, or what kind of thing it must be. It is not a curse and it is not something living in you with a name of its own, and treating it that way would let both of us off the hook of the plain truth, which is that a man can love God for thirty years and still have one room he has never turned the light on in.
You do not have to say it to a room
Here is what I am not asking you to do. I am not asking you to tell your wife. I am not asking you to stand up on a Sunday. I am not asking you to put it in a text to your small group at midnight because an article made you feel brave for eleven minutes.
There is one Person who already knows the whole of it, and He is in the car.
You are already fully seen and you were fully seen before you ever got in that driver's seat. Hebrews 4:13 says everything is naked and laid bare before the eyes of Him with whom we have to do, and His Spirit searches the deep things and was not waiting on your announcement to find out.
That said, hear this plainly, and it does not belong in small print at the end of anything. If the one thing is doing damage, to your body, to your marriage, to a person who cannot protect themselves, then the human being you bring in is God moving on this, not you giving up on Him. A doctor, because a body and a compulsion run on the same wiring, far more than I would have believed at thirty. A counselor, who has heard exactly your one thing before, on a Tuesday morning, and did not flinch and did not look at you differently afterward. And if the hour in this driveway has started turning toward getting out of your own life for good, dial 988 before you go in, or a crisis line closer to home than that, and have somebody with you before the porch light goes off. Where somebody is being hurt, secrecy is not humility and it is not what God is asking of you.
You have been close to Him this entire time, and never at a polite distance from the specifics. Psalm 34:18 puts the Lord near the brokenhearted and saving the crushed in spirit, and the Spirit who searches the deep things of God has been sitting in this car through every year of the pause.
So say it, or do not say it, and hear me carefully, because both of those are allowed tonight.
You are held by a God who is not standing outside the car waiting for a sentence. Micah 7:18 says He delights in mercy, present tense, as a matter of what He is like rather than what you have managed, and the Spirit who lives in you has been in the passenger seat for all nineteen years of the pause. Nothing about your standing tonight hangs on your ability to get one word out of your mouth.
And now that nothing is riding on it, you might find you can. That is usually the order of it. A man does not confess his way into being loved. A man who already knows he is loved finds his mouth working.
You have permission to hand it over without describing it. Scripture says the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words, which means the Holy Spirit has already been carrying to the Father the exact thing you have never once managed to say, in full detail, for years. You are not informing God. You are agreeing with Him.
Declare this over yourself
Say these in the car with the water still coming off the roof, out loud, where only God hears them. Not one line rests on anything a man brought with him into this driveway: the standing is being in Him, and it was settled about you a long way from any Tuesday. Micah 7 is the ground all three of them are set in, and whether a sentence lives at eleven forty at night is the Holy Spirit's doing, so whisper them if a whisper is the whole of what will come. He may answer in a way nobody sitting on a set of keys would have picked, and the answering is His and not a thing I get to arrange.
- Sentence that stops in my mouth every night in this driveway, you are not bigger than the mercy that is already over you. Micah 7 says God subdues our iniquities Himself and throws them into the depths of the sea, and He has known the name of you since long before I could not say it.
- Fear that this is the one He would want back if He ever heard it out loud, your nineteen years in this passenger seat are finished. In the name of Jesus, get out and stay out, because Scripture says God delights in mercy, and the Holy Spirit who has been in here the whole time has never once flinched at the specifics.
- Lord, You already know the one I mean, and I am handing it to You tonight without dressing it up. Your word promised that You cast our sins into deep water where nobody gets anything back, and Your Spirit is carrying to You what I have never been able to say, so I am saying amen and going inside.
