The Man in the Old Photograph

This message is for the man looking at a photograph taken in his first apartment, thirty years of faith later, who could not tell you what is different about him

The shoe box has a rubber band around it that snaps the moment he touches it, which tells you how long it has been in the closet.

It is a Sunday afternoon and raining in that steady way that makes a whole day feel like four in the afternoon. He is at the kitchen table with the box open and the photographs coming out in handfuls, stuck together at the corners. A glass of iced tea is sweating a ring into the wood beside him. He is meant to be clearing the closet, and he has been at this table for fifty minutes.

The one he is holding now was taken in his first apartment. He is twenty four in it. Beige carpet, the kind that came with everything back then. A beanbag chair somebody gave him. A poster stuck to the wall with tape that took the paint off when he moved out. He is sitting on the floor with a plate of rice on his knees and his mouth open mid sentence, and at the right edge of the frame there is somebody's forearm and a can, and he cannot remember whose arm it was.

He was already a believer when that was taken. Three years in. He remembers the church, a rented hall with stackable chairs, and he remembers being certain about a great many things and being hungry all the time in a way that had nothing to do with food.

Thirty years.

And here is what he does at the kitchen table with the rain going: he tries to name what is different. Not the obvious things, not the job or the house or the two children or the back that hurts in the mornings. The other thing. The thing all of it was supposedly for.

He looks at the twenty four year old on the beige carpet and the list will not come. He is quieter, maybe. He is not sure quieter counts. He knows more, but knowing more is just years. He still has the same temper about the same three subjects. He still goes hard on himself at two in the morning about a phone call from 1998. Thirty years of Sundays, of Bibles, of praying in cars, and the man on the carpet and the man at the table feel like the same person wearing different weather.

He puts the photograph down and picks it back up.

Maybe you have been at that table. Maybe it was a box, or a video somebody sent, or a birthday with a number on it that made you go looking. And the honest sentence, the one nobody says at church, is that you went looking for the difference and came back with almost nothing, and it frightened you more than you let on.

Nobody can audit a thing from inside it

Start here, because the whole afternoon at that table rests on a mistake that is very easy to make and almost impossible to see.

He is doing an audit. He is standing inside the only life he has ever had, with no way to step out of it, comparing a photograph to a feeling, and grading the result. And he has appointed himself auditor, defendant and clerk of the court, at a kitchen table, on a rainy Sunday, with nobody there to say a word in his defense.

You are not the right instrument for measuring what God has done in you, and being unable to name it is not a finding against you. Scripture says a man does not even see his own heart clearly enough to convict or acquit himself, and the same word puts that judgment with the Lord instead; the Spirit knows what is in there and has never once handed the reader a form to fill in.

Think about what he is comparing. On one side, a fifteen hundredth of a second of one afternoon, a boy with rice on his knees and no interior at all. On the other side, this moment, from the inside, with every unfinished thought and every two in the morning included. That is not a comparison. That is a picture set beside a whole weather system.

You have been given something better than a list, and it was given before you started looking for one. The word says the good work in a person was begun by God and is being carried on by God, and it is His Spirit doing the carrying, so nothing on this table has to be proved before it can be true.

The wanting is His work too

Now the verse this whole shelf turns on, and read it slowly, because most of us have only ever read half of it.

For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.Philippians 2:13

Both. To will and to do. Not just the doing, which is the half everybody notices. The willing. The wanting. The fact that a fifty four year old man is sitting at a kitchen table on a Sunday afternoon actually caring whether he has changed, when he could be watching a game and not thinking about it at all.

That caring did not come from the beige carpet. It is not native to us. A man who genuinely did not want to be different would not be at that table with the rain going and a photograph in his hand.

You have been worked on tonight in the one place you would never think to look, which is the wanting itself. Philippians 2:13 says God works both halves in you, and His Spirit does not send a notification when He starts; the ache you brought to this table is not evidence of failure, it is a fingerprint.

And notice what the verse does not offer. No schedule. No sense of how much, or how fast, or what it ought to look like by the time a man is fifty four. Paul writes it to people already in it, already years down the road, and he does not hand them a chart. He tells them who is at work.

You were being worked on through the whole thirty years, including the stretch you would describe as wasted. That is what the written word claims about the God who begins things, and the Spirit was not on a break during the years the man at the table cannot account for.

The years that will not photograph

Here is what a photograph cannot hold, and it happens to be most of what thirty years actually did.

It cannot hold the arguments he did not start, or the fact that he now hears the second sentence of what somebody says instead of only the first, or the way he sat with a man from work whose wife had left and said nothing clever and stayed. The twenty four year old on the carpet would have had a lot to say. He would have said it well, and he would have said it to be heard saying it.

And a photograph certainly cannot hold what happens to a man in the years he prayed and got nothing back. Those years feel like the empty ones. They are frequently the load bearing ones.

Now, the plain paragraph, because there is a version of this afternoon that has very little to do with photographs. If the flatness is everywhere, if nothing has had much color in it for a long stretch, if you have gone numb rather than merely tired, take that to a doctor, because a body and a brain are physical objects and this is a medical question as much as a spiritual one. A counselor as well, since nobody can read their own weather from inside it and a trained person can. Help with a name and an appointment time is God helping, and He has never asked anybody to hold out for a purer channel. And if the two o'clock hour has stopped sounding like regret and started sounding like a door, reach 988 before you sleep, by phone or by message, or your county crisis line, and have one human being at that table with you and the box.

You are held in this by hands that are not yours, and you were held in it on the days you felt exactly nothing. The word says God is near to the brokenhearted and Jesus named His Spirit the Helper, and a Helper is not somebody who waits for a good report before He turns up.

The breakthrough

So put the audit down. Not because it is wrong to want to see, but because you have been holding the wrong end of it: a man at a table with a photograph, trying to prove a work that belongs to somebody else, on evidence he was never given access to.

This is yours right now, at the table, with the list still empty and the rain still going. Philippians 2:13 says God is working in you both to will and to do, present tense, no conditions attached to it; the Spirit is doing that in a fifty four year old man who cannot name one thing, and the naming was never the qualification.

That is the whole relief of it. If the evidence had to come from you, an honest man with a short list would be in real trouble, and the men best at describing themselves would be the holiest men alive, which anybody who has met a few of both knows is not how it goes.

You have thirty years of hidden work standing behind you, and it is already finished as far as its beginning goes, because He began it. The written word puts the beginning, the carrying and the completing in God's column, and it is His Spirit at work in you now, not the version of you that could produce a good answer at a kitchen table.

Declare this over yourself

Say these with the photograph face down on the table. The right to speak them is not yours by seniority and never was. It belongs to you because Christ took you into Himself and set up house in you, and that is the only ground a sentence like this stands on. His word is underneath every line, and the Holy Spirit is what puts an old promise into a kitchen on a wet Sunday, and none of it waits on your being able to feel anything at this table. What He does next, and how long He takes over it, I leave in the garden's words: not my will, but Thine.

  1. Photograph on the kitchen table, you are one afternoon of light in a rented room and you were never the ruler I get measured with. Philippians 2:13 says God works in me both to will and to do, so the evidence is in His hands and not on your paper.
  2. Suspicion that thirty years produced nothing in me, get out of this kitchen, in the name of Jesus. Philippians 1 says the good work in me was begun by God and is carried on by God, and the Holy Spirit has been working in the years I cannot account for.
  3. Father, You are the one who has been at work in me since the beige carpet and the stackable chairs, and You did it where I could not watch. Your word promised that You work the wanting as well as the doing, so I am turning the picture face down and going to pour a drink, and I am leaving the audit with You.
